(ci. zoe-45) The present invention is directed initially to a package including a plurality of rows of similar units of merchandise packed within a container, which is so constructed and arranged that 5 upon receipt by a storekeeper the constituents of the container may be properly erected and as sembled and the rolls or other units of merchandise placed Within the intended positions lin the container for the purpose of providing an attractive counter display which will conspicuously ex hibit the merchandise and aiford a suitable back panel for the advertisement thereof.

The container of the present invention is constructed of a. single sheet of paper board, suitably scored and folded to give it the configuration' of an open-topped bin, which container in con- `iunction with the back panel and a collapsible platform, and the rolls or similar contents, con

stitute a rectangular package oi4 suitable shape to be snugly packed Within a box or carton, or

other shipping receptacle. v

'I'he display stand is formed from a blank comprising a rectangular body portion 10 bounded 4 by front and rear folding lines 11 and 12 respec-v tively, and end folding lines i3- 13, which body portion Aultimately constitutes the base of the stand, and at each end of the body portion is an inner wing section 14 which progressively widens .from front to rear and which in the erected stand 0 constitutes the outer ply of the end wall.

Each of the inner wing sections is connected along a folding iine l5 with an outer wing section 16 of similar shape, which is adapted to be .folded inwardly along the folding line 15 and to lie against .and register with the companion section 14 to furnish the inner ply of the end wall of the erected stand, the

14 and 16 being connected in complementary right and left relationship to fold upon one anotherin the manner indicated.

Each of the outer wing sections 16 is connected along ,a folding line 17 with a terminal flap section 18 adapted to be folded to right angle relationship to the outer wing section to lie upon the body portion 10 of the stand, asshown in Fig. 4. 65

The front edge of the body portion l0 along the folding line l1 is connected'to an intermediate iront section 19 adapted when the display stand is erected to aiord the outer ply of the relatively low front wall. The outer front wall section 20 70 along a folding line 21 is connected with the intermediate front wall section 19 and is -in turn connected along a folding line 22 with a front iap section 23.

In erecting the stand the initial front wall section 21 is folded downwardly toabut the outer wall section 19, and the ap 23 is turned inwardly to rest upon the body portion 1t, as best shown in Fig. 2. The body portion l0, along the folding line 12, is connected with an outer back wall section 24, which is connected along a folding line 25 with an inner back wall section 26, which in turn is connected along a folding line 27 with a back nap section 28. ,In erecting the display stand the section 24 is bent upwardly to afford the outer ply 85 of the back wall. and the section 26 is bent downwardly to aiIord the inner ply, with the ilap 28 abutting against the base of the stand.

Each of the outer side wall sections 14 is provided at its rear end with a tongue 29 and at its 90 front end with a tongue 30, and in erecting the stand the respective tongues are turned inwardly to lie between the inner and outer plies of the rear wall and front wall respectively.v

In order to aiord a better corner lock between the front and rear flap sections 23and 28 respecftively, at the corners'where they Vengage the ends ofthe side ap sections 18, the latter are provided with L slots 31 furnishing tongues 32 presenting their free ends toward the ends of the flaps 18, so that in the erecting of the display stands these tongues may be slipped under the contiguous edge of the front and

23 and 28 at the points where the flaps overlap one another, thus better holding the naps m incermcked rennqn at the corners. This tongue arrangement, however, is optional.

The display stand also comprises the platibrm r section shown in Figs. 6 and 7,' which platform section is formed from a blank comprising a body no 33 deflned by side folding lines 34-34 and end folding lines 35,--35. On each side of the platform body is a side wall section 36 connected by afolding line 34, and the sections 36in turn are connected along folding lines 37-37 with bottom sections 38I and 39 respectively. The bottom section 39 is provided with a tongue 40 which is adapted to be slipped through a slot 41 in the section 38. End iiap sections 42 are connected to the ends of the body section 33 along the folding lines 35.

In erecting the platform, the side wall sections 36 are downturned and-the bottoni sections inturned and interlocked as shown in Fig. 7, and the end flaps 42 turned down to aord a rectangular boxlike structure adapted to fit within the rear half of the display stand to aord a platform for the elevation of the rear row of `rolls or other commodities offered for sale.

A back panel i3 of rectangular shape is provided, and said panel is provided with e. tongue i4 which is adapted during erection to be turned inwardly to rest upon the top of the platform, as shown in Fig. 2.

The display stand is designed in the present instance, during shipment, to enclose a group consisting of six rolls of toilet paper 45, each of whichv is preferably surrounded by a. label 46 in the form of a narrow belt or girdle, which label displays the name or brand of the toilet paper, without, however, covering or concealing the major portion of the roll, and it is preferred to enclose the roll with vthe band label in an outer sheath or wrapping of Cellophane, which makes provision for the protection of the paper and at the same time displays the label therethrough 'as well as the texture ofthe paper comprising the roll, thereby affordingfull opportunity for inspection.

Duringshipment, the platform is collapsed by infolding the aps 42 to lie against the body portion, which permits flatwise collapse of the platform along the folding lines, and the collapsed platformmay then be laid-in the base of the stand, as indicated in Fig. 3, with the six rolls of paper standing packed in level relation and with the back panel laid flatwise across the top, which arrangement aifords a rectangular partially closed package adapted to be fitted with similar packages into a square box, carton or the like, for shipme'nt in quantity. v Upon receipt by the customer, the platform will be erected to its boxlike formation and placed in position against the back wall of the stand, thereby aording an elevation'upon which to mount the rear rank of rollsor other`commodity units' which it is desired to display. With the rolls thus arranged, the rear rank will over-top the front rank and the back panel will stand-vertical to aii'ord an advertising display behind the rear rank, the back panel being held against displacement by its contact against the rear wall of the stand, with the rear rank of rolls resting upon the flap 44 and serving `by their weight to hold the rear panel in upstanding-position.

Although the device has been described in full detail, it is not the intention to limit the invention to the exact `form shown, since modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention; nor is it the intention to limit the use of the device to the shipment and display of rolls of paper, since boxes or packages of other forms may be shipped and displayed in the manner described.

I claim:

In a package of the character described, the combination of an enclosing member comprising a fiat base terminating at its margins in front, rear, and end walls, the rear wall being higher `than the front wall, and the upper edges of the end walls sloping upwardly from front to rear, said enclosing member being formed from a single blank of material having the front, rear,

and end walls connected to the base along folding lines, a collapsible platform adapted when erected tov fit within the rear half of the enclosing member and in contact with the rear vwall thereof, and adapted when'collapsed to lie fiatwise within the enclosing member, two rows of uniformly shaped units of merchandise of a height substantially equal to the height of the rearwall and greater than the height of the front wall, and a flat display panel of dimensions substantially equal to the base of theenclosing member and resting upon the tops of the units of merchandise when packed for shipment. to

provide a substantially rectangular assembly, the

platform being erectable to elevate the rear row of merchandise units into stepwise relation to the front row, and the display panel being of proper dimensions. to stand vertically between the rear row of merchandise units and the rear `wall of the enclosing member, with its base resting upon the erected platform and with its upper portion projecting above the rear row of merchandise for trade announcement purposes.
