Description

July 6, 1948. V a. c. MULNIX 2,444,709
DISPLAY PACKAGE Filed Dec. 7, 1945 Patented July 6, 1948 UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPLAY PACKAGE Ersel C. Mulnix, Lake Bluff, Ill. Application December 7, 1945, Serial No. 633,361
The invention relates to improvements in display packages and has for its primary object the provision of an improved enclosure especially adapted for use as a display package, which is of simple construction and highly efficient in use. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists of the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. I
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification and in which- Fig. l is a plan view of a blank from which an enclosure embodying the invention may be readily made;
v Fig. 2, a perspective-view, with portions broken away, ofthe completed enclosure;
Fig. 3, an enlarged section taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 an enlarged section taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings comprises a blank of cardboard, heavy paper or the like, consisting of a central backing sheet l having side walls H and i2 extending along each side of the backing sheet l0 and foldable upwardly with reference thereto, as indicated. The side walls II and I2 are provided, respectively, with inwardly foldable portions l3 and i4, adapted and arranged to form side ledges on the completed box, as indicated. The walls ll, I2, and ledges l3 and it, are provided with end flaps ii, iii, and 14', which are foldable into cooperative relationship to hold the parts in place in the completed disclosure, as best shown in Fig. 3. Securing flaps l5 are provided at each end of the backing sheet ill, the inner portions 16 of each securing flap constituting end walls, and the portions marked i5 constituting end ledges in the completed enclosure. The portion l5 of each securing flap is provided with inwardly foldable. stiffening flaps l1, and the free end of each securing flap is in the form of a T-head l9 having the stem 18. The
ledges l3 are provided with shoulders 20, as indicated. The ledge N is provided at its free edge with a cover member 2! having laterally extending securing tongues 22 at its free end.
In use, the side walls II and I2, and the side ledges l3 and I4, are first folded upwardly and inwardly, and the end flaps H, i3 and i4 folded into cooperative relationship. Then the triangular stiffening flaps H are folded inwardly and the securing tongues are folded upwardly and inwardly and the T-heads l9 inserted in the enclosure and brought to positions adjacent the end walls [6 as indicated. thereby forming a relatively stiff and secure enclosure having inwardly extending ledges around its four sides and adapted to receive various articles of merchandisc for display. To close the cover member 2|.
'said cover flaps arranged 3 Claims. (Cl. 229-34) the locking tongues 22 are inserted in the diagonal slits 23 formed by folding the flaps I! in-' wardly, as best indicated in Fig. 2, thereby providing an adequate lock for holding the cover member closed.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying the invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An enclosure of the class described comprising a backing sheet; side flaps foldable, first upwardly to form side walls and then inwardly to form side ledges at the tops thereof; a securing flap at each end of said backing sheet, foldable first upwardly to form end walls and then inwardly to form end ledges at thetops thereof in cooperative alignment with said side ledges; outwardly projecting end tabs at each end of said end ledges foldable in angular relation thereto against the inner face thereof, forming eased edges in juxtaposition with the faces of said side ledges, providing a pocket at each corner of said enclosure; a securing flap at each end foldable in juxtaposition with said foldable end tabs; and a T-head at each end foldable in parallel alignment with each end wall in locked position.
2. The construction specified in claim 1 in which the enclosure is provided with a cover flap hingedly connected to one of said ledges; laterally projecting tongues at each outer comer of and adapted to be engaged by the pockets at the iunctures of the opposite side ledge with each end ledge thereof.
3. The construction specified in claim 1 in which the end tabs project outwardly beyond the marginal sidelines of said central backing sheet, and whenfolded have tact with their respective end wall.
