wall of the box body is cut away to display the contents of the box from the front' when the hinged cover is in open position, wherein the said front wall cooperates with the cover to secure u the latter iniclosed position and further serves to provide support for the cover to prevent sagging or inwardly crushing of the cover under pressure from above, such as when a number of boxes are piled one upon the other.
u Another feature of the invention is to provide a box in which the cut-away front wall is reinforced by forming the same of a double thickness to support the front end of the hinged cover under any ordinary pressure or load to which the cover may be subjected.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of cardboard box in which the front flap of the hinged cover may be guided into its proper interfitting position with respect to the -front wall of the box body to facilitate and expedite the swinging of the cover to fully closed position.
A still further feature of the invention is to provide a cardboard display box having the above mentioned improvements which does not increase the cost of the box over previous cardboard boxes of this general type.
Other features of the invention will appear as the following specification is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several forms of the .invention herein described.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, thenumeral I 0 designates the preferred form of my cardboard box in its entirety and which is of rectangular shape in configuration, although the invention about to be described may be embodied in boxes of other shapes if desired. The box I0 includes a body II comprising a bottom wall I2, parallel upstanding side walls I3-I3, a. rear end wall I4, an inner relatively low front end wall I consisting of overlapping flaps ISH-I5al which are respectively formed integral with the side walls I3I3, and an outer front end Wall I6 formed integral with the bottom wall I2. Formed integral with and extending inwardly from the top ofthe side walls I3I3 are flaps I'I-II. Acover I8 is hinged to the top of the rear end wall I4 as at I9 and has a hinged downwardly extending front flap 2l) at the front end thereof.
The box I0 including the body II and hinged cover I8 may be constructed from a single blank of `cardboard folded into the set up position as illustrated in the drawings, vor the box maybe made of two or more foldable blanks pasted, stitched, or otherwise secured together. The essential features of the invention will be more fully explained hereinafter.
The inner front end wall I5 is cut inwardly from the top as at 2| so that each flap I5a is provided with an upwardly extending front corner extension 22, the inner side edges of the flap extensions22 converging downwardly so that the opening in the frontof the body is wider at the top than at its bottom.
Formed integral with the outer front wall I6 is a lock flap 23 hinged on the fold 24, the same being of a height equal to the height of the front wall flaps I5a and which lock flap has spaced tongues 25-25. The lock flap 23 is of a width equal to the width of the bottom of the opening in the front and is folded inwardly through the opening and fiat against the inner sides of the flaps I5 of the inner front wall I5 as best illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings. The tongues 25-25 enter slots 26-26 in the bottom wall I2 at the front end thereof to secure the folded lock flap 23 against accidental unfolding. The lock nap 23 when in locked position acts to prevent outward separation of the lapping front flaps I5a and thus holds the front end of the body II in rigid set up position.
The cover locking flap 20 .is provided with a tongue' extension 21 which is of a, width equal to the width of the fold 24 of the flap 23 and disposed on opposite sides of the tongue extension 21 are relativelyshort semi-circular shaped tongues 28-28. Notches 29--29 are formed between the inner edges of the tongues 28 and the side edges of the tongue extension 21. When the hinged cover` I8 is swung to closed position over the body II, the tongue extension is inserted inwardly of the front end of the body to lie against the iiap 23, while the short tongues 28-28 respectively engage the outer sides of the iiap extensions 22-22 and as they slide downwardly thereagainst they are guided to a position into pockets 29 formed between the extensions 22 and the outer ends of the outer front wall I6. When the cover reaches the limit of its closing movement, the ends of the fold 24 enter the notches 29, thus limiting the closing movement of the cover and providing a support for the front end of the cover although the tongue 21 terminates short of the bottom I2 of the box body II. The extensions 22-22 also act as stops for preventing the inward swinging of the front cover iiap 20. The tongue extension 20 serves to close the open portion of the cut-away or notched front wall I5.
Heretofore in display boxes of this type, the cover relied upon the side top aps I1 and the engagement of the cover flap with the bottom wall of the box body for the support of the cover against any'pressure applied thereto when the cover is in closed position. Such construction is insucient to withstand the pressures to which boxes are subjected when stacked for shipment, resulting in the inward crushing of the cover and disiigurement of the display box as a whole. Whereas in my construction the side iiaps I1 act as a seat for supporting the intermediate portion of the cover I8, the interfitting of the notches 29 with the ends of the low front wall of the box, act to rmly support the cover against accidental inward crushing.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures l to 5, the cover I8 when closed is free to be swung to open position, but in Figures 6 and 7 I have shown a slight modification wherein the cover may be locked inclosed position. The construction shown in Figures 6 and 7 is the same as that previously described, with the exception that the tongues designated 28-28 are wider than the tongues 28-28 heretofore described and are notched inwardly to provide hook portions 30 which may be forced past the ends of the fold 24 to engage beneath the fold and become locked thereto. To open the cover it is only necessary to flex the tongues 28' outwardly to disengage the hook portions from the ends of the fold 24.
In Figures 8 to 10 inclusive I have illustrated a further modified form of my invention wherein the lapping flaps ISLIE, outer front end wall I6, and an inwardly folded flap 23 are held together by a metal stitch or staple 3|. The iiap 23 is similar to the flap 23 heretofore described but it terminates short of the bottom wall of the box body for in this form the stitch 3I is relied upon to hold the front end of the box in assembled position instead of the interlocking of the infolded ap with the bottom wall. Also, in this form` of the invention the tongues 28 on the cover flap are dispensed with and the corners 32 between the tongue extension 21 and front cover ap 20 act as the equivalent to the notches 29 and engage the ends of the top edge of the low front wall structure of the box body. Whereas the support for the front end of the cover shown in this modified form is substantially the same as that in the preceding forms, this construction is more diiiicult for an operator to handle when moving the cover I8 to closed position for the guide tongues 28 are absent, and which tongues 28 facilitate the guiding of the longer tongue 21 inwardly of the low front wall of the box.
In display boxes of the kind herein set forth, it is customary to provide the cover I8 with a transverse score line 33 whereby the cover when open may be folded upon itself and the front cover iiap inserted down against the inner side of the rear end wall I4 and the folded cover held by the rear ends of the side flaps I1-I1 whereby the folded cover will stand upright and display any advertising indicia which may be printed thereon. I'hus the box IIJ may be opened and placed upon a counter or in a store window to clearly display the contents of the box and any advertising indicia printed upon the cover. l While I have shown and described several embodiments of my invention, I wish it to be understood, that such further modifications as come within the spirit of the invention may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
