The areas 60 and 64 are covered with an adhesive 65 which is used for uniting these sections to the sections 6| and 63, respectively, to form sidewalls for the liner. therein, thus providing five rectangular sections, namely, 26, 21, 28, 29 and 36. The sections 26, 21, and 28 have one face thereof rendered adhesive by the application of glue or other material which is designated by the reference character 32. During the formation of the box a suitable cardboard filler 34 is placed upon the section 26 and one face thereof is secured thereto by the adhesive. The section 21 is folded over one edge of the filler 34, and then the section 28 is folded over the other face of the filler. Both of the sections 21 and 28 are also secured to the cardboard material by the adhesive 32 previously described. When the lid portion has been completed, the members 26, 21, 28 and 34 will appear as one unit such as shown in Figure 2. The sections29 and 36 are not attached to the cardboard 34 but merely extend downwardly into the box in the manner shown in Figure 3 adjacent the back sidewall l8.
The bottom portion III also has end walls 31 joined thereto along bend lines 38 and the free ends of each end wall has, in turn, joined thereto along bend line 39 suitable locking flaps 40. The sidewalls and endwalls are joined together at their corners by suitable triangular areas 45 and 46. These triangular sections are separated by diagonal crease lines 41 which crease lines substantially bisect the 90 degree angles at the corners between bend lines l2 and 38 as well as between bend lines 38 and 11. The triangular areas 46 preferably have suitable coatings of adhesive- 49 applied thereto which is employed for attaching the same to the inner face of the end walls 31 in'the manner shown in Figure 2. I
In order to erect the collapsible box, the sidewalls II and H! are pulled to a substantially vertical position and this action will, in turn, force the end walls 31 to a substantially vertical position. Then the end sections 45 and 46 will be doubled upon themselves so that their layers will occupy a position parallel to the end walls, and
thus provide a suitable reinforcing truss member which .will prevent the sidewall from spreading at the corners of the box. Locking flaps will then be folded inwardly along lines 39, so'that the free end of locking tab will be disposed in I close proximity to the bottom 10 of the box in i the manner shown in Figure 3.
- These locking flaps 40 serve to hold the corner sections and 46in folded position; however, it must be borne in mind that it is necessary to have someadditional means for preventing these flaps '40 from againmoving upwardly and releasing these folded corner sections to permit the collapse ofthe box. Therefore, it has been found necessary tofprovide asuitable liner filler for the interior of the box which will hold the locking flaps 4B in erected position.
The liner which is used to hold the locking flaps 46 in position against the folded corner sections, is formed from a blank (Figure 4). This blank is,-crea'sed along lines" 56, 51, 58 and Figure 4, and then folded downwardly against areas 6| and 63, thereby forming doubled side- 10'.

Also Figures 11 and 12 show how' the projections 68 fit into the notches 69 so that: the liner will be held in position within the box to cause the locking flaps 40 to be held against: the collapsed corner sections, which in turn are.- folded against the end walls 31 of the box.
Figure 10 also shows how the sidewalls of the: liner cooperate with the sidewalls of the box. In. the right-hand portion of Figure 10, the'flap or: section 30 which extends from the lid of the box, slidably fits into asuitable groove 12 which is; disposed between the area 64 of theliner sidewall and the area [8 of the box. '7 to move downwardly within the confines of thebox sidewalls and to rest upon the top edges of the liner sidewalls. This additional thickness: of the lid has certain reinforcing advantages and. also provides sufficient thickness for receiving a. suitable nail 15 for holding the lid in closed position as shown in Figure 14. 'When the lid is low-- ered within the confines of the side and end walls; the box is thereby made much stronger, and more capable for holding fragile goods such as cigars: and the like. With the lid 26 in closed position, its edges fit against the 'end walls and sidewalls of the box as it rests on the top edges of the liner. This prevents the box from being bent out of rectangular position.
As heretofore stated, it is very essential to have means for elevating the goods in the box as the same are being used, so that the upper surface of the goods will occupy a position near the top edge of the box and give the appearance of a filled box. Also by raising the goods the inside of the end and sidewalls will be concealed from view. In order that a simple and convenient means may be employed for elevating the goods, an additional bottom is provided which is formed from a blank 16 (see Figure 6). This blank comprises a main bottom section 11 and adjacent flaps or legs 18, which legs are joined to the bottom section 11 along bend lines 19. Each of the extensions 18 has integral therewith a short projection 89 which is slightly narrower than notches ill in the section 62 of the liner 55. The notches 8| have adjacent notches 82 which are narrower than the notches 8| or the projections 8%]. Therefore, the projections 80 can only fall' in notches 8|. It will be seen by observing Figure 6 that when the blank Ti is folded along scored lines 79 and inserted in the liner 58 that the projections 80 will fit in their respective notches 8i and be held in position so that the bottom portion 'l'l will be held in spaced relation to the bottom section 62 of the liner, and therefore the 9| are adaptedto contact the locking flaps 45 v of the box and hold the same in position. In
turn, the end walls of liner 88 are held in erected position either by thev goods within the bo-x 'or goods which rest upon the. portion 11 will be raised nearer the top of the box.
When the box is filled with merchandise such as cigars 85 as shown in Figure 14, the leg projections 18 are adapted to be folded inwardly parallel to portion TI and on top of section 62 (Figure 7). I
In order to raise bottom portion 11, it is necessary to gain access to the collapsedlegs or extensions l8 and rotate them about their crease'lines until they assume a position substantially at right angles to the bottom of the box such as shown in Figures 8, 9 and 10. Suitable slots 86 are provided in the bottom area ll! of the box-(Figures 1, 2 and 3) These notches substantially'coincide with slots 82 in the linerbottom 62, said slots 82 and 86 being provided so that ones fingers in the ap ended claims. I

In the drawings and specification, there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are Cm.-
ployed, they are used in a generic and descrip tive'sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being I claim:
1.: A'ipaper box having a bottom, sidewalls, and
end walls, one of said sidewalls extending beyond the top of the box and being folded inwardly upon itself to form a lid, a rigid cardboard filler secured between said folds, a flap integral with thefree end of the inwardly folded portion slidably extending downwardly into the box adjacent the sidewalls, a liner in said box'comprising a substantially rigid rectangular paper box of shalmay be inserted therethrough to contact the collapsed legs 18 and move them to erected position. Projections 80 extend beyond the edg'eof legs 18 a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the section 62 of liner 55. It is seen by referring to Figure that the bottom edges of the projections 80 are disposed in the notch ill and 3 rest upon the bottom ll) of the box. There is no particular objection to the slots 82 and 88' because the bottom area 11 serves to close these holes when the box is filled, and at all times this area shields the bottom portion of the material or merchandise within the box from view when looking through these slots, even though the bottom may be erected to elevated position as shown in Figure 9. The bottom TI has suitable notches 8'! cut in opposed ends thereof which are employed for inserting or removing this member from the box.
Figures 15, 16' and 17 show a slightly modified form of the invention which differs from the pre ceding form only in the construction of the liner.
The improved liner is designated by the reference character 88 and the parts which are similar to lower depth thanthe first box and adapted to fitsnugly'in the first box, one wall of the liner partially covering said free end whereby the upper thickness only will be hinged to said sidewall and'the. hinge line will be concealed from an observer standing in front of the open box.
2. A paper box having a bottom, sidewalls, and end walls, one of said sidewalls extending beyond the top of the box and being'folded inwardly upon itself to form a lid, a rigid cardboard filler secured between saidfold's, a flap integral with the free end of the inwardly folded portion slidably extending downwardly intov the box adjacent thesidewall, a liner in said box comprising a rectangular paper b'ox' adapted to fit snugly in the first box and to press against the walls thereof and whose upper edges stop short of the upper edges of the walls of the box a distance approximately equal to the thickness of the lid,
the liner previously described will be given like reference characters and the additions to the liner will be given new reference characters. The chief difference in this liner and the liner shown in Figures l and 5 is the fact that the ends of portion 52 have suitable end wall extensions 89 showing two portions 88 along crease or bend lines 90. Joined to the extensions 88 are suitable flaps 90 along bend or crease lines 92. Disposed upon one face of-each of the slots 91 is a suitable adhesive 93 and this adhesive isused'to unite the areas 9|, 89 to form a'solid end wall at each end of the bottom portion 52. Figure 16 shows the liner 8% when it has been erected and it is here seen that both the sidewalls and the end walls are substantially flush top so that when the same is placed inside of the box in the manner shown in Figure 17 that the four edges of the cover will be properly supported. Of course the elevating bottom 16 is adapted to be inserted within the liner 88 after the same has been placed,
within the box. The endwalls of the liner 88 which are formed from areas of sections 89 and;75 I
whereby the unattached edges of the lid will fit within the confines of the sidewalls of the box and rest upon the top edges of the liner so that s when the lid is moved to closed position and attached to the front wall of the box, the side and end walls of the box are restricted from moving out of rectangular position, one wall-of the liner partially covering said'free end of the inwardly folded portion whereby the upper thickness only of the lid will be hinged to oneof said sidewalls and the hinge line will be invisible to a person standing in front of the open box.

A rectangular paper box having sidewalls and end walls and having a rigid lid hinged to" one of the sidewalls,-a liner, comprising a recs tangular paperbox adapted to fit snugly within the box, the upper edges of the liner being disposed below the top edges of the box a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the lid portion, the lid portion being adapted when .in,
closed position tofit within the side and end walls, whereby when the free end of the hinged lid is securedto the box the lid will'prevent movement of the sidewalls out of a rectangular-'- position, the lid portion adjacent to the point I where it is'hinged to one of the sidewalls of the box having a flap extending downwardly into the box to cover the fold line between the lid' and the box, said sidewalls having cavities therein and the linerhaving projections to fit into said cavities.
