Description
A. o. DALLER Nov. 22, 1932.
CARTON Filed July 1. 1927 INVENTORY? I 2a 4 ,3 f ATTORNEYS.
Patented Nov. 22, 1932 l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ADRIAN O. DALLER, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO DALLER CARTON CO. INC., A'COBPORATION OF NEW YORK CARTON Application filed July 1, 1927. Serial No. 202,773.
This invention relates to a box which is both structurally and functionally improved.
It is an object of the invention to provide a box of this character which will furnish a permanent seal as well as a temporary closure, the former serving after the packing of the box to maintain the contents thereof intact until purchased by the user, and the latter being employed by the purchaser until the contents of the receptacle become exhausted.
A further object of the invention is that of furnishing a box preferably of the endfill type which may be readily shipped and stored to occupy a minimum of space prior to its filling, and which subsequently to the latter operation will provide a relatively strong receptacle capable of withstanding rough usage of an ordinary character.
A still further object is that of furnishing a box which may be readily blanked out and in which the blank may have certain of its parts joined immediately subsequently to its production without the resulting article occupying more than a minimum amount of space, and in which, at the time of filling,
.the remaining box parts to be joined may be secured to each other with facility and econy' Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The
article of manufacture possessing'the features, properties andtherelatiorr of elements which will beexemplified in the article hereinafter described and the scope ofthe application'of which will be indicated inythe claimsr p For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which I Figure 1 is'a plan view of one form of blank to provide a box embodying the construction of the present invention;
Fig. 2 shows a collapsed box having certain of its parts joined; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the completed box. 8
invention accordingly comprises an- With primary reference to Fig. 1, the numeral 5 indicates the'base of the blankprovided with end sections 6 of a length equal to the height of the box to be formed and from the edges of which sections'tabs 7 extend. Arranged one to each side of the baseportion 5 and forming a part of the blank are side walls 8 and '9, respectively, from the end edges of which flaps 10 extend. Beyond the side edge of the section 8 a coversection 11 is provided having its outer side edge terminating in a flap 12. Beyond the side edge of the section 9 a further cover section 13 is furnished.
These several sections, flaps, tabs, etc., are defined by score-lines 14, or any other suitable expedient may be resorted to so that these portions may readily be bent to extend at angles to each other, and at this time it will be observed that a preferably relatively heavy score-line 15 is provided between sections 9and 13 and which may be additional to the score-line furnished for bending. Consequently, a user may sever entirely the section 9 from the section 13 by any properin- 'strument.
In the embodiment of the invention shown the section 13 is illustrated as of substantially .the same size as the cover section 11. If desome cases the heavily scored orperforated line, shown in the drawings as at 15,-may'be impressed on the section 9 in close proximity to its outer edge, leaving between the edge and the score-line a narrow sealing portion. The tucking flap 12 is, under such circumstances, long enough to extend Well below the score-line when the box is assembled.
It is obvious that a box blank of this order may be readily and cheaply produced, and, as stated above, this box is of that type which is particularly useful when packed by an end fill- In order to expedite the subsequent complete assemblage of the box embracing the attachment of its several parts one to the other, it is desired that certain of the sections thereof be partially joined 'rior to shipment and at the time of manuia'cture of the blank. To this end, as hasbeen shown particularly inFig. 2, the cover-section 11 is'folded inwardlyt-o overlie the sidew'all-sec'stioniB, and the side-wall-section 9 is foldedinwardly to overlie the base' 5, the cover-section 13 overlying and being conveniently secured to the u per face of the coversection 11 in any suita l'e manner, as,-.for example, by jglue. Thus, an article is roduced (as shown in Fig. 2) which, as will be appreciated, will occupy a minimum amount of space and which will lie flatwithout injury to its parts.
When the box. is ready to be completely set up,it will be obvious that by proper pressure the article, as in Fig. 2, may have its parts brought to, a position atwhich' its side walls extend parallel to each other and at right angles to the tops and-bottoms, the ends of the box' remaining open. At this time, or subsequently to the closing of one end of the box, it is filled by introducing through the opposite end thereof, in package form or 1 otherwise, thearticle or articles with which to moisten the proper areas of the parts referred to. Thereupon, the end-sections 6 are folded upwardly so that the glued inner faces thereof engage the outer faces of the outermost flaps 10; it being understood that the flaps 7 are bent -to extend inwardly at right angles to the end-sections 6 to bear'against the inner face of thel-topsection 11. The'jouter edges of the flaps 10 preferably are cut at a slight angle so that ample clearance will be provided between these upper edges and the inner face of the top section to permit of the introduction of the flaps, which latter preferably are tapered to facilitate such in troduction. The filled box now may be shipped. and it will be obvious that if any attempt is made to tamper with the contents, this will be readily apparent to the purchaser. The latter, upon desiring'access to the interior of the box. simply will cut along the scoreline 15 and swing the cover upwardly, this action resulting in a breaking ottheglue connection between the flaps 7 and the inner face of the cover 11. Thus the pcrn'iancnt seal is broken. but the cover '11. carrying with it the cover or top 13. may he swung to ('loscund open the receptacle until such time as the latter is discarded, the initial opening resulting in the breaking of the connection which existsbetween'the inner face of the coyer 11 and the" outer faces of the flaps 7:
Thus, among others, the objects of this invention have een accomplished, and since certain chan es may be made in theabove article, and difi erent embodiments of the invention could be made, without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or' shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is to be understood that the invention described and claimed herein is not to be limited by the terminology employed or the relative dimensions of the portions in the device shown in the drawing. Those parts referred to as covers may be sides, ends or bottoms and the box or carton may be taller than it is broad, etc.
Within the scope of the invention it is intended that one section or wall which may 1n whole or in part lie against another section or wall may be provided with a weakened or perforated line whereb a sealed container may be unsealed by brea ingalong the weakened line, and wherein a portion of one of the sections which lie against each other may become available as a tucking flap for use durligng the period of temporary closure of the It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
