(N0 Model.)

w: Ndwms PETERS ca, Pnmau' nou wAsNmaTou. n. c.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

GEORGE E. SMITH, OF WINDSOR, NEWV YORK.

PENCIL ORPEN HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,728, dated June 13, 1899.

Application filed March 16, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, GEORGE E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Windsor, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil or Pen Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the class of devices designed for holding pencils, pens, and other similar objects in the pocket or on other parts of coat or vest.

The object of the invention is to provide a convenient and inexpensive device for this purpose which may be readily secured within the pocket or upon some part of the clothing in such a manner as to permit one or more pencils or penholders to be readily inserted or removed and yet will exert sufficient pressure to prevent them from dropping out of place.

My invention consists of a strip of springbrass or other metal sufliciently elastic bent to form when attached an elliptical-shaped holder about two inches long, with semicircular ends about five-sixteenths of an inch in diameter, as usually made, which can be readily pinned to the garment, thus forming a cheap and durable holder that can be quickly applied or removed without injuring the f. bric.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure l illustrates the application of myinvention to the pocket of a vest with pen and pencil in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the application to a piece of cloth or other fabric. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the device.

My pencil-holder in its most adaptable size is made of a strip of spring-brass or other metal four inches in length and one-eighth of an inch in width, with ends tapered to asharp point. The ends d cl are each bent back and inward about three-fourths of an inch, as shown in Fig. 4.

Serial No. 709,250. (No model.)

The holder is applied to insideof pocket by inserting one point (Z and pressing in cloth to end of holder, then inserting the other point d in like manner, which will fully adjust holder, with front a parallel to back of pocket and pen and pencil e e held securely in place against front 0 by the pressure of ends 61 d on rear of pocket.

The holder is applied above the pocket or on any other part of a garment in like man ner with equal effect, as shown in Fig. .2.

By reference to Fig. 3 it will be observed that by means of the spring ends (1 d the device is adapted to hold pencils of a larger size in one end without impairingits efficiency in holding pencils of a smaller size in the other end.

It is obviously apparent that this device may bev made in other sizes than that enumerated above and that the semicircular ends may be varied in size without in the least de parting from the nature and spirit of the invention.

Without attempting to set forth all the different sizes in which my invention may be made and all the different uses to which it may be applied, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

A garment having its pocket provided with a pen and pencil holder, the same being formed of a single piece of spring material in elongated loop form with its ends bent toward each other and inserted in the material of the garment and holding the opposite portion of the loop permanently at a distance from the portion of the pocket to which the holder is secured thus forming a receptacle and holder for the pencils which are engaged by the material of the holder, substantially as shown and described.

In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

' GEORGE E. SMITH. .Witnesses:

WM. D. Oseoon, O. A. ROBERTS.
