PATENT 'GFFICE.
FRANK JOHN ATKINS, OF FORT MADISON, IOWVA.
PENCIL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,843, dated December 31, 1901.
Application filed April 4, 1901. Serial No. 54,366. (No model.)
To all whom it may conoornr- Be it known that I, FRANK J OHN A'rxnvs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Madison, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Pencil Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pencil-holder for application to the pocket of a garment; and the object of thesame is to provide a simple and effective device of this class that can be easily applied in operative position at the mouth portion of a pocket and effectively hold pencils or other articles in place in a pocket without liability of falling from the latter, the improved device being strong and durable and inexpensive in the cost of manufacture.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a garment, showing a pocket with the improved device operatively applied to the mouth or entrance portion thereof. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the frame of the holder. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section through the device, as shown by Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 1 designates the frame of the device, which is shown by Fig. 3, and includes an upstanding enlarged inverted-U-shaped loop 2, merging at the lower extremities or legs into spring-coils 3, and from opposite portions of the latter arms 4 extend upwardly and rearwardly toward the legs of the said loop 2 at an angle of inclination. The'arms 4 extend upwardly about midway of the length of the loop 2 and at their upper extremities continue into spring-coils 5, having a U- shaped keeper 6 depending from the inner opposing por -ns thereof, the said keeper being of less w cal extent than the arms. The entire franc is constructed and bent into shape from a single piece of spring-wire of suitable gage, and it willbe seen that it is completely open at the bottom between the coils 3, and also it will be understood that the coils 3 and 5 cause the parts with which they are intimately related to tend to return to normal position when pulled or spread apart, so that -when the device is applied and pencils or other articles are inserted thereina firm removable securemeut of the entire device will result and the pencils or other articles will be reliably retained in proper position.- The frame as thus formed is provided with a covering 7, of leather, cloth, or other suitable material, which may have suitable advertising matter applied thereto to designate a certain business or the name of a merchant or company,.and which will be located on the portion of the coveringover the upper portion of the loop 2, the keeper 6, or on the front below the latter. It is also intended to embellish the said covering with designs or ornamentations of a pleasing character and to color the same as maybe desired. The covering 7 is applied in such manner that all the parts of the frame are inclosed, and the individual parts of the said frame are free to perform their several functions, an opening 8 being formed between the front and rear portions of the covering below the coils 3, as clearly shown by Fig. 4, to permit pencils, pens, tooth-brushes, or other articles inserted in the device to depend below the same into the body of the pocket to which the holder is operatively applied. The covering also provides closing means for the front and rear portions of the frame and prevents the articles inserted in the holder from coming in contact with the upper portion of the pocket and produces a more extended frictional grip on the articles placed therein.
In applying the improved holder the covered keeper 6 is caught and pressed downwardly over the upper edge portion of a pocket, as shown by Fig. 1, so that the arms 4, coils 3, and the lower portion of the loop 2 will depend into and be hidden within the pocket, thereby leaving the keeper exposed over the front of the pocket and the upper part of the covered loop 2 standingv above the latter to serve as a guard or shield to protect and prevent breakage of pencitpoints and also to assist in guiding the articles placed in the holder to the proper point for insertion therethrough. The articles are pushed downwardly through the holder between the front and rear portions of the covering and through the lower opening 8, and the parts of the frame being shaped and arranged as set forth and of a resilient nature will set up a binding action on the articles and firmly hold them in the pocket against accidental displacement or disengagement. One or more of the articles can be withdrawn at any time desired without in the least detracting from the effectiveness of the holder in retaining the remaining devices therein.
Changes in the form, size, proportions, and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A holder of the class set forth, comprising a frame having an inverted- U -shaped loop, front arms having upper coils, and a U- shaped keeper-depending from the coils of the arms, the arms being of less vertical height than the inverted-U-shaped loop and connected to the lower portion of the latter by coils.
2. A holder of the class set forth, comprisin g a frame made from resilient material open at the lower portion and having an inverted- U-shaped loop, front arms, and a U-shaped keeper depending from the upper portions of the arms and of less downward extent than the latter, the arms being of less vertical height than the inverted-U -shaped loop, and a covering for the frame forming front and rear portions for the holder and also open at the bottom, the arms extending rearwardly toward the legs of the inverted- U -shaped loop to provide for a clam ping contraction between the parts of the covering over the upper extremities of the arms and the adjacent portion of the covering over said inverted- U- shaped loop.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK JOHN ATKINS.
