J. M. SGHOPIELD.
SAFETY TIP FOR PENGILS.
Patented Sept. 25, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrica.
JAMES M. SGHOFIELD, OF MERCED, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY-TIP FOR PENCILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 390,038, dated September 25, 1888.
Application filed May .23. 1888. Serial No. 274,822.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,JAMEs M. SOHOFIELD,Of Merced, Merced county, California, have invented an Improvement in Safety-Tips for Pencils; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the class of penciltips; and my invention consists in a rubber tip piece or band adapted to be applied to the pencil and formed or provided. with prongs of the same material.
The object of my invention is to prevent the pencil from dropping from the pocket, as it is liable to do when a person is in a leaning position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 shows the application of my tip in the form of a round rubber eraser in the end ofa metal cylinder applied to the pencil permanently or rcmovably, as desired. Fig. 2 shows my tip in the form of a flat piece ofrubber. Fig. 3 showsit in the form of an independent band.
The tip A is of rubber, and is formed or provided with a prong or prongs, B, of the same material. the pencil 0 directly or indirectly, or in any of the customary ways of securing erasers thereto. Thus in Fig. I itis shown connected by a metal cylinder, D, which may be either This tip may be applied to- (No model.)
of the kind permanently attached to the pencil or adapted to be removed from one end and put on the other in order to protect the point.
In Fig. 2 the rubber tip is a flat one, in which case I deem a single prong, or at most two, sufficient.
In Fig. 3 the tip is an independent rubber band, which is fitted over the pencil and may or may not serve as an eraser.
In all cases the prongs serve to hold the pencil in the pocket by catching in the material of the pocket, but yet, on account of their yielding character, they do not appreciably resist a positive effort to withdraw the pencil when necessary; nor, on account of being made of rubber, do they injure the clothing in any manner; nor do they affect the function of the tip as an eraser.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A safety-tip for pencils, consisting ofa piece of rubber fitted to the pencil and provided or formed with a prong or prongs of rubber, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES M. SOHOFIELD. Witnesses:
