PEN AND PENCIL HOLDER.
' Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 16, 1914.
Application filed .Tuly 29, 1913. Serial No. 781,877.
To all whom it may conce-rn.'
Be it`known that l, JAMES M. LEGAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Morton, in the county of Scott and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful improvements in Pen and Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a pen and pencil holder for use in conveniently supporting pen holders' or pencils on the person and preventing accidental loss of the same.
The invention embodies, among other features, the provision of a pen and pencil holder preferably made of leather with means for conveniently attaching the same to the clothing of the user and means for preventing the accidental loss of the pen or pencil supported by the holder, the holder being further arranged to include a shield for preventing any ink upon the pen holder or the lead of the pencil from soiling the clothes.
ln the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part oit this specication, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation ot the device; 2 is a rear elevation; ldig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Eig. 1; and d is a sectional view taken on 'the line g. 1. g more particularly to the views, lf disclose a pen and pencil holder consisting of a haclr- 11 a iront 1%, sewed or otherwise secured to the back 11 to iiorm a bag or receptacle 13 adapted to receive pen holders or pencils therein, the said back 1l including an integral upward extension forming a shield 1d to prevent the upwardly projecting ends of the pen holders or pencils trom coming in Contact with the clothes of the user.
A plate 15 is arranged on the back 11 and includes through the back and through the front 12, a spring-like grippingmember 17 being arranged to extend across the front 12 adjacent its upper edge and normally close the receptacle 13,'with the ends of the gripping member secured to the lugs 16. Y
An attaching member 18 of any preferred design is carried by the plate 15 and a similar attaching member 19 secured to the front 12 immediately beneath the gripping member 17.
1n the use of my device it will be seen that by providing a plurality of attaching members, the device can be supported either at the back or at the front when applied to the clothing of the user and by providing the gripping member 17, pen holders or pencils inserted in the receptacle 13 will be i'rictionally feld therein and prevented from accidental loss.
The device described is of a simple and durable construction, can be cheaply manutactured and can be readily applied to the clothing of the user.
Having thus described my invention, l claim:
ln a pen and pencil holdenthe combination with a back, of a iront attached thereto and forming a receptacle, an upwardly projecting shield formed integrally with the back and projecting upwardly beyond the front, an attaching member carried by the iront, a plate extending transversely to the back, lugs formed with the plate and projecting through t-he back and through the front, sprmg-lilre gripping member extending aci-:oss the iront immediately below its upper edge and having its ends connected with the said lugs, and a second attaching member carried by the said plate.
