UNrTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR E. PARRETT, OF LAFAYETTE, INDIANA.
DESK ATTACHNI ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,985, dated December 31, 1901.
Application filed April 1, 1901.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR E. PARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lafayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an attachment primarily designed for use in connection with school-desks for the reception of ink-Wells and the like and preventing accidental displacement thereof.
The invention comprises an elongated drawer or receptacle adapted to he slid in and out as occasion may require upon supportingbrackets attached to the under surface of the desk, provision being made to prevent the complete withdrawal thereof.
The novel details in the arrangement and construction of the several parts of the device will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter and the appended claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof.
In the drawings the preferable embodiment of the invention is illustrated, and like reference characters refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device detached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Sarial No. 53,814. (No model.)
vided with laterally extending flanges 1), adapted to slide over the members I) of the brackets. Suitable stops 19 project from the under surface of the flanges of the drawer into suitable slots b in the brackets, the slots being closed at opposite ends to constitute abutment-s for the stops to prevent excessive movement of the drawer in either direction. The drawer or receptacle is divided by a partition G into a relatively shallow compare ment 0 and a relatively deep compartment 0. The deep portion of the drawer is designed to support an ink well or fount and the shallow portion pens, pencils, and the like. At the extreme end of the drawer near its upper portion is a cross-rod D, upon which one end of a penholder or pencil is designed to rest, and
the partition 0 is formed with cutout portions D, adapted to receive the opposite end of the same. By thus supporting the pen and pencils they are at all times in a position to be readily grasped by the user, and their extended portions will be supported above the body of the ink-well to the sides of the neck thereof, as shown in dotted lines.
Instead of employing the cross-rod D above referred to it may sometimes be found desirable to form a shoulder or the like at the end of the drawer or receptacle, as shown in sec= tional detail, Fig. 4.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a drawer attachment of the character described, the combination with a body portion, of a relatively deep well-supporting section at one end of the body portion, a partition between the wellsupporting section and the remainder of the body portion below the plane of the upper edge of the body, a series of recesses in the upper edge of the partition, and supporting means secured to the body portion at a point away from but in alinement with the base of the recesses in the partition, substantially as described.
2. In a drawer attachment of the character described, the combination with a body portion, a relatively deep well-su pportin g section at one end of the body portion, a partition bethe partition, substantially as and for the tween the Well-supporting section and the repurpose described. 1o mainder of its body portion, portions of the In testimony whereof I affiXmy signature upper edge of the partition being below the in presence of two Witnesses.
plane of the upper edge of the body, and a EDGAR E. PARRETT. supporting means secured to the body portion Witnesses:
