SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,878, dated June 28, 1904. Application filed October 21,1901. Serial No. 79,453. (No model.)

To all whom zit-may concern:

Be it known that we, J EWETT CAsTELLo GIL- SON and DAVID HIRAM ROWE, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and Improved School-Desk or WVriting-Table Attachment,of which the following is a specification.

Our invention seeks to provide a simple, inexpensive, and readily-applied appliance adapted to be attached to school and other writing desks and tables for conveniently holding rulers, pens, pencils, erasers, and other articles such as are generallyv used by scholars or clerks or accountants, and in its generic nature it comprehends a body portion made partly or wholly of wood, papier-mach, or metal of a shape to snugly fit against one end of the desk or table under the top and provided with rack portions for supporting pens, pencils, &c.; and in its more subordinate features our invention consists in abody portion having the contour of a desk end adapted to snugly fit up against the inner side of said desk end and with its upper and lower edges made to engage the top and bottom members of the desk and provided with means for conveniently interlocking with the desk end, said body having one or more brackets or ledges to sustain pens, pencils, erasers, &c., in convenient position, certain other details of construction being also included in the complete make-up of our invention, all of which will hereinafter be described, and specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view illustrating a portion of a desk with our improved appliance attached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken practically on the line 3 '3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a perspective View of our improvement detached from the desk. Fig. 5 illustrates our improvement as applied to a writing table or desk.

In its practical construction our invention embodies a body portion 1, made wholly or partly of wood, papier-mach, or metal, preferably lined on its bracket sidewith a soft material 2, such as felt, or left plain, as desired. The body 1, when the appliance is to be attached to an ordinary school-desk, is shaped to form a counterpart of the inner side of the end to which itis applied, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, by reference to which it will be also noticed theupper edge l snugly engages the under side of the desk-top, such correlative arrangement of the body 1 with the desk B being provided to hold the body 1 from tilting or endwise movement and from rattling, and to further hold it firmly in place the body 1 is equipped with a threaded shank or bolt 3, that projects inwardly for conveniently extending through the open iron-work end I) of the desk, to which it is clamped by a turnbuckle or winged nut 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.

Upon the inner face of the body 1 is secured in any desirable manner a series of brackets or ledge members, the upper and lower ones 5 5 of which preferably extend the entire length of the body, while the intermediate ones 5 5 are each formed of a plurality of sections in like horizontal alinement and said sections separated to provide an open space 6 between them to admit of freely gripping the pens, pencils, and like other articles, which said brackets 5 are especially intended to support, and lifting same off said brackets. The upper and lower brackets or ledges are especially adapted for holding rulers, rubbers, erasers, &c-. If desired, one or more hangerpins'7 may be also projected from the inner side of the body at a point in advance of the bottom of the desk for suspending sundry articles.

In Fig. 5 we have illustrated our improved appliance as attached on the outside of one end of a writing-desk. In this form the contour of body 1 is made to suit the shape of the table end, and in this case the bolt 3 passes through a suitable aperture made in the table end to receive it, the upper edge 1 of the body 1, together with the bolt, serving to keep the appliance properly positioned.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the advantages of our invention will readily appear. It will be apparent that when used on a school-desk each pupil has a place for everything and danger of getting anothers pencils and other articles is overcome, and as it can be attached to or detached from a desk in less than a minute the scholar can remove the appliance at close of each school day and pack it away with the books, &c., this being especially advantageous when two school sessions for different scholars are had each day.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for school-desks and the like, comprising a flat body portion of a size and shape to conform to the shape of the desk and lie flatwise thereagainst, a felt covering on the exposed face of said flat body portion, means for securing said body portion to the end of the desk, said means including a screw-bolt having a winged nut, horizontally-disposed ledges or projections secured to the outer face of the flat body portion, the upper and lower ones extending entirely across the width of the body portion, the intermediate ones being formed in sections to provide finger-spaces between each horizontal ledge, said spaces being disposed in the same straight line, and a hook member attached to the said flat body portion all being arranged substantially for the purposes specified.
