JOHN H. HARRELL, OF BALTIMORE. MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE HARRELL BUREAU-DESK COMPANY, OF NEIY YORK, N. Y.
' BUREAU AND DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,825, dated October 20, 1896. Application filed February 6, 1896. Serial No. 578,228. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. HARRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Bureaus and Ohilfonniers, of Which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a bureau or chiffonnier with a desk or shelf, so
1o that it has the shape and conveniences of a bureau, but can be converted into a Writingdesk in a ready and convenient manner.
A further object of this invention is to provide the desk portion with a paper-receptacle and a self-closin g ink-Well.
W'ith these objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction, arrangement, and the combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and spe- 2o cilically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speoication, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts in z 5 the several views, in which- Figure l is a view in perspective of a bureau with my attachment in place. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a side view of the desk-top. Fig. 4 is a sectional View 3o through the desk and bureau, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the desk and bureau centrally of the ink-Well. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a section of the bureau and shelf.
In the drawings, l is a bureau of ordinary 3 5 constrnctiomexcept that a Way 2 is form ed under the top to receive the sliding board 3,Which forms the desk or shelf. A guide-piece a is secured to the hoard and provided with guideslots 5 to receive the angular braces 6, which 4o are pivoted near the bottom of the bureau. These braces have their angular extensions sliding in the slots 5 and serve to retain the shelf at any angle of adjustment. The shelf or desk is further provided With a notch a, which receives a pin 13, whereby it is held in position when open.
The front frame-posts 7 of the bureau have longitudinal recesses 8 to receive the bracerods when the desk or shelf is in its closed position.
The desk or shelf is provided with a paperreceptacle 9, which is provided with the cover l0 when the desk is in its closed position. An ink-Well ll, having an ordinary springactuated lid l2, is also provided, and when the desk or shelf is closed the lid will be closed, as shown in Fig. 5 but when the desk or shelf is pulled out, as shown in Fig. l, the lid Will automatically rise, as will be apparent.
IIaving fully described my invention, what 6o I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A bureau having its front frame-posts provided with longitudinal recesses, bracerods lying normally in the recesses, a sliding shelf arranged in the top of the bureau, guides arranged on the bottom of the shelf, the angular ends of the brace-rods operating in slots of the guides, a self-closing ink-Well arranged in a depression in the shelf, and a paper-re- 7o ceptacle provided with a lid also arranged in the shelf, as and for the purpose described.
2. A bureau having its front frame-posts provided With longitudinal recesses, bracerods lying in the recesses, a shelf slidable in the bureau and having a notch to receive the supporting-pins, guides formed on the shelf in which the ends of the brace-rods operate, a self-closing ink-Well, and a paper-receptacle on the shelf, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of tivo Witnesses.
JOHN II. HARBELL.
