RECEPTACLE.
KPPL'ICATION FILED APR. 5. 1915.

UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE."
ESTHER E. THORSELL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
REGEPTAGLE.
Application filed April 5, 1915.
b (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ESTHER E. THORSELL, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to receptacles for holding school supplies such as pens, pencils, rulers, paste, water color supplies, etc., and one object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive receptacle which can be rcmovably secured to school desks and tables, and will occupy but little space when in position for use.
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a receptacle of this character which may be employed to advantage in sup porting open copy books, note books, sheet music, etc.
in order that the invention may be readily understood. reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the receptacle with its lid in open position.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the receptacle with its lid closed.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the receptacle.
applied to a school desk and having its lid open to support a copy book on the lid.
As shown by the drawing, the receptacle consists of an elongated box 1, the rear side 2 of which is inclined to snugly fit the corner formed by the top A of a school desk and the back B of a seat constituting the back of said desk A.
The receptacle is reliably held in place by a pair of resilient hooks 3 secured to the inner side of the back 2 and bent in proper shape to extend over the back of the top B and grip the front surface thereof.
The hooks 3 are countersunk in the upper edge of the back 2, so that they will not interfere with the closing of a lid 4 secured to the front wall of the receptacle by a pair of hinges 5. The lid 4c is of such length that when it is thrown open as disclosed by Fig. 3, it assumes a slightly inclined position and its lower edge rests upon the upper surface of the desk A, thereby forming a firm sup- Specification of Letters Patent.

port for a copy book 0 or other article which it is desired to support in front of a pupil.
The lower edge of the copy book C rests upon a pair of supporting hooks 6, secured to the inner side of the lid 4. The hooks 6 in addition to forming a support for copy books, sheet music, etc., when the lid 4 is in open position, also act as a fastening device in holding said lid closed by frictionallyengaging the inner surface of the back 2, as disclosed by Fig. 2.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that I have produced a convenient receptacle for holding many of the articles used by school children, and one which occupies but little space when placed in position upon a desk, and while I have shown the preferred form of my invention, it is obvious that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination with a desk, and a receptacle on the top and at the front thereof, a lid hinged to the front of the receptacle and formed so that the lid when open will have its free side seat on the desk top to hold the lid inclined, and members secured to the normally inner face of the lid at the free side of the latter, said members having concave faces to receive a book or the like, and having convex faces formed to directly engage the inner face of the vertical back wall of the receptacle when the lid is closed.
2. In combination with a desk, and a receptacle thereon, a hinged lid for the receptacle, and members secured to the normally inner face of the lid at the free side of the latter, said members having concave faces to receive a book or the like, and having convex faces formed to directly engage the inner face of the vertical back wall of the receptacle when the lid is closed.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
ESTHER E. THOR-SELL.
