This invention relates to a holder for recipe books and the like, and an object of the invention is -to provide'a holder of suitable size and proportions to contain one "or any number of books, cards, pamphlets, etc., and which when opened to give access to the contents provides a temporary rest or easel-like support for the book or the like at which time the book or the like may be conveniently held in such a position that it may be readily seen for reading etc. I A further and more detailed object is to provide a holder in the form of a box having a hinged cover, the arrangement being such that when the cover is closed the contents of the box will be fully enclosed and protected and when the cover is swung open it will co-operate to provide an easel-like support upon which oneof the books or the like from withinthe box may be temporarily supported in a position so that the reading matter on the pages of the book may be easily readg A further object is to so construct the holder that when the cover portion thereof is swung open an edge surface only of said cover portion will engage. against the surface of the table upon which the box rests, thereby preventing likelihood' of injury to the broad flat .surface of the cover portion.

Alfurther object is to so construct the holder that the cover'portion, when swung closed, will have a suitable snap engagement with the remainder of the holder so as to prevent its accidental opening movement, the snap? engagement being provided for without .necessity for the use of any separately formed clips or 'clas'ps of any kind.

Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in .part obvious and in part pointed out in the,

course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended. claims.

Referring to the drawing for describing in detail the structure illustrated therein, it will be seen that the holder includes a main body portion L and a cover portion G hinged together at a point H so that-the cover portion may swing from its open position as indicated in full lines to its closed position as indicated by thedot and dash lines in Fig. 2 The body portion consists of front 'and'back walls 1 and 2, opposite end walls 3 and 4 and a bottom wall 5 and these define the compartment within which is'contained the articlesQ for instance the recipe books indicated 6-6; Preferably aninclined false bottom as 7- is' provided within this body so that the books 6, or the like, stand elevated one behind the other toa suitable extent so that they may be readily picked out one at a time from the holder, in use. v The front wall 1.is cut low,being slightly less than half the height of the body portion; the remainder of the front wall of the complete box consisting of the .front wall part as.8"of the cover portion G, said part 8 being thereby longer than the wall 1 sothat when the cover portion is swung open a corner only as 9 of'the cover portion will engage against the surface 10 of the table or other support upon which the device is'resting at the time. V

The cover portion consists of the front wall part 8, a small rear wall part 11, opposite

end wall parts

12 and 13, and a top wall part 14. These wall parts are "in such relationthat when the cover portion is thrown closed the small rear wall part ll'must be forced or snapped over the top edge 15 of the rear wall 2 of the body portion, as indicated in Fig. 2. The whole structure is preferably formed of cardboard, sheet metal, or other semi-rigid material so that the inherent elasticity thereof, together with a certain yielding quality provided in the hinge H, will enable-the wall 1 to snap over the edge 15 of the back wall 2-and prevent any opening movement of the cover portion except when manual pressure is applied to force the wallpart '11 back again out of engagement with the edge.

These two notches are of similar contour and together they cooperateto provide a very convenient and .efllcient retaining holder into which may be positionedlower edge portions of a book or card containing material desired to be read from time to time by the user of the device. The notches provide forwardly, facing surfaces as;.19 against which the book or card may lay, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, and rearwardly facing of a. leaf of a book to swing out of the notch.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is; I

1. As an article of manufacture, a holder comprisingabody portionadapted to contain articles intended to be inspected and a cover portion, the cover-portion being hinged to the body portion to swing between open and closed positions, and having means thereincooperative with a part of the body portion when the cover portion is in open position to at that time provide an easellike support for an article placed to engagesaid means and said bodypart, y

As an article of manufacture, alholder comprising a. body portion adaptedto contain articles intended to be inspected-and a cover portion, the cover portion being hingedto the body portion to swing between open an'd closed positions, the body and cover portions having parts arranged with respect to thehinge .so that the cover portion willlhavea f snap zacting connection with swung closed against the body portion, the cover portion having a pair of notches adapted when the cover portion is thrown openlto receive lower edge parts of an article fromwithin'the body portion, and the body portion having parts adapted to be, engaged by relatively upper poritions of said article when said article is resting in said notches, saidlcover portion and said body portion thus havinghparts cooperative to constitute an easel-like support for the article.

As an article ofmanufacture, a holder comprising a-bodyfportion adapted to contain articles intended to'be inspected and a'cover portion, the coverportion being hinged to the body portion to swing, between open. and closed-positions and having opposite end walls each formed witha notch therein, said notches being adapted, when the cover portion is in open position to cooperate witha part of the body portionjto provide ,an easel-like support for an article placedjtorest in said notches and against said body part,
