nIRAM E. BUTLER, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YoRK.
COMBl NED BLACKBOARD AND DESK.
SPEQIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,080, dated January 23, 1894. Application filed geptember 4, 1893- Serial No.484fl- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l-IIRAM E. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at J amestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Blackboard and Desk; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others sklllcd in the art to, which it appertains to make and use the same. a
The object of my invention is to make a cheap and durable drawing board and mounting it on an easel in combination with a copy sheet, and one that will be well adapted for pup ls or children, and the improvementscon- $1 513 1n the adaptation and arrangement of the diiferent parts for this end as will be understood by this specification and the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation with board down; Fig. 2, a front view with easel closed; Fig. 3, a side sectional view. 1
In the drawings A. A. represent the side piece of an easel frame made preferably of wood and broad enough so that near the top are mounted, the rolls 1). b. to which the copy sheet D. is attached at each end and on which, said sheet may be turned by the knob or handles on the right side. In mounting said copy sheet, I prefer to have it pass over the top roll and underthe bottom one, as this brings the turning of both knobs the same way, and 1s more convenient for the child, than when mounted in the usual way, and it brings the drawings of the copy perpendicular when the.
easel legs are opened, and the board at the proper angle for ease in marking; on the inside of the back 0. I securely fasten the beveled board a. and this acts as a back to the copy sheet so as not only to keep it from bending back, but much less liable to be injured or torn if any pressure comes against the sheet between the rolls. This is a very important 1mprovement. The back legs B. B. are hinged to the front legs or frame near their top. Across these back legs I secure the back 6. made of suitable thickness of wood to stiffen the frame and the top forming a support against back 0.
ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
On the main frame, and on the front side of back 6, I put the curved strips and cross piece as shown to form receptacles or pockets, e, e, and d, d, that are used for holding letters, pencils, &c. Sometimes, instead of securing the back S, to the legs 13,13, as shown, I put on an end piece to this back inside the legs, and put a screw through each to fasten them to the legs, and then the pockets can swing forward when the black-board is down and is more convenient for placing articles in the pockets.
The copy sheet D, has a large number of figures that are brought to View at one time, p
and as this sheet of cloth or paper (or both) can be made long, any desired number of objects may be shown from the first rudiments,
to face and landscape figures.
C, is a blackboard finished preferably with a slate surface so that fine lines may be drawn and having grooved strips into which the ends of said board are secured theboard being pivoted through these strips into the frontlegs or main frame, and when used as a black-board or slate is used standing in line with the main frame as shown in Fig. 3, and when turned down as shown in Fig. 1, may be used for a writing desk or to hold a book or for other purposes. When desired this side of the board may be given a slate finish.
c, is a metal spring securedto the leg B, and the upper end passes through the leg, for the purpose of supporting the rear of the board when turned down as shown in Fig. 1. Other devices for holding the rear of the board may be used to a good advantage. The
main frame may be made in sections if so,
ing of an easel frame having side pieces the upper ends of which are joined by a back the inner face of which is beveled, rolls mounted.
in said upper portion between the sides and provided with a copy sheet adapted to pass across said beveled face, the leg portions hinged or pivoted to said sides below the lower roll having a back or portion formed with reroc ceptaoles, a black-board hinged or pivoted at In testimonythatI claim the foregoingIsign or near its center to the inner portion of said my name in the presence of two witnesses. sides, and a spring catch on the leg portion with which the rear end of the black-board HIRAM BUTLER 5 engages whereby the latter is retained in an Witnesses:
