GEORGE A. HENDERSON, OF STEPI-IENVILLE, TEXAS.
COMBINED EDUCATIONAL CHART, DRAWING-BOARD, AND WRITING-DESK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
Application filed June 22, 1907. Serial No. 380,333,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. HENDER- SON, citizen of the United States, residing at Stephenville, in the county of Erath and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Educational Charts, Drawing-Boards, and riting-Desks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in furniture, and more particularly to a novel device com bining in one article a writing desk, drawing board, and educational chart.
The object of the invention-is to provide a strong, durable and inexpensive device of this character which can be readily set up or collapsed as desired and which embodies novel means for mounting the educational chart and for locking the members in operative position.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same when set up for use. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the device when folded. Fig. 1 is a sectional view through the chart containing chamber.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following; description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The device comprises essentially a main frame designed to be supported by means of the legs 1 and carrying a swinging leaf 2 and a casing 3 within which the educational chart is mounted. This main frame embodies the side pieces 4: connected at an intermediate point by means of the cross piece 5 and toward their upper ends by the spaced cross bars 6. The space between the cross bars 6 constitutes the chamber within which the educational chart is mounted and is closed at the rear by means of the back piece 7. A rectangular frame 8 is applied to the forward portion of the chamber and rollers 9 are journaled between the side pieces 4 and within the chamber, one of said rollers being located near to each of the spaced cross bars 6. A Web 10 is carried by the rollers 9 and a strip 11 connecting the side pieces 41 serves as a backing for that portion of the web stretched between the two rollers. This web is designed to have suitable educational matter marked thereon and may contain a number of lessons upon various subjects such as drawing, penmanship, shorthand, telegraphy, music, arithmetic, bookkeeping, etc. Knobs or inger pieces 12 are provided for operating the rollers 9 whereby the same can be turned to bring any desired portion of the web 10 into such a position as to be stretched across the mouth of the chamber between the spaced cross bars 6.
The swinging leaf 2 is provided with the end pieces 13 which are pivotally connected at an intermediate point to the side pieces 1 and when in a folded position extend from the cross piece 5 to the lower cross bar 6. These end pieces 13 project laterally beyond the front and rear faces of the swinging leaf and may serve as a means for securing a slate 14 upon the swinging leaf, the said slate being exposed for use when the swinging leaf is swung into the plane of the main frame. A locking member 15 is mounted upon one of the side pieces 41 for holding the swinging leaf in the said position.
A casing 16 is mounted between the upper portion of the legs 1, the back of the casing being extended beyond the ends thereof and engaging the rear edges of the legs 1. The interior of the casing 16 is subdivided into a plurality of compartments by means o partitions 17 and guard strips 18 extend transversely across the face of the casing and serve to retain papers and the like within the compartments formed by the partitions 17. These guard strips project outwardly beyond the forward edges of the legs 1 and the lowermost guard strip is designed to engage the rear edge of the swinging leaf 2 and limit the pivotal movement thereof when the device is set up for use as a desk. Flexible tie mem bers such as the chains 19 are utilized for connecting the legs 1 to the respective side pieces 4 of the main frame to limit the outward swinging movement of the former, thereby preventing the two from spreading apart to such an extent as to permit the rear edge of the swinging leaf to move above the guard strips 18.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame comprising side pieces connected by an intermediate cross piece and also connected towards their upper side pieces, a casing between the legs, and a guard strip extending across the face of the casing and serving to engage the edge of the swinging leaf to limit the pivotal movement thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature I in presence of two witnesses.
' GEORGE A. HENDERSON. [It 5.]
