To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnonen A. Harmansox, citizen of the United States, residmg at Mansfield, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Educational Charts, Drawing-Boards, and wraingDesks, of which the following is a spamfication.

This invention relates to improvements in combined educational charts, drawing boards, and writing desks, and has for one of its objects to improve the constructlon and increase the efiiciency and utility of devices of this character.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein provision is made for rigidly supporting the parts when in open position and to enable them to be folded within a small space when not in use.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construct-ion as hereinafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device arranged as a writing desk; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation w th the parts arranged as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the parts folded or collapsed; Fig. 1 is an enlarged sectional detail on the line 4.et of Fig. 3.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved device comprises main supporting legs 1011 spaced apart and provided with a scroll-supporting frame represented as a whole at 12 at the upper part and divided intermediate the ends by a transverse brace member 13, the latter being supported by suitable braces 14.

Pivotally connected at 15-16, to the main leg members 10-1l, just below the frame 12, are the rear supporting braces 1718. The legs 1718 when extended rearwardly at their lower ends, support the main legs 10-11 in a rearwardly inclined position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Extending between the rear legs or braces 1718 atthe upper portion, is a rack device represented as a whole at 19, and divided by partitions 20 into a plurality of pockets or Specification of Letters Patent.

receptacles for paper, envelops, cards and the like, the contents of the pockets being retained in position by a plurality of trans verse strips or guards 21. At its upper edge the supporting member 19 is provided with a transverse member 22 having a concaved upper face to form a relatively long receptacle for pencils, rulers or the like. The rear legs or braces 1718 are connect-ed and supported by diagonal braces 23.

Formed in the inner or confronting faces of each of the main leg members 1011, is a relatively long pocket or recess one of which is shown at 24, and pivoted at 25 in each of the pockets at its lower end is a plate or bar 26 while similar plates or bars 27 are pivoted at 28 to the outer faces of the rear legs or braces 1718. At their confronting ends the plates 2627 are pivotally united at 29 and overlap for a considerable distance. Each of the plates 26 is provided with an inwardly directed stop lug 30 which bears over the contiguous edge of the other plate 27, and thus serves as a stop to limit the downward movement of the plates beyond a horizontal line as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, while at the same time leaving them free to be folded upwardly into parallel relations as shown in Fig. 3. By this arrangement it will be noted that the plates 2G-27 when in extended position, form effectual supports to retain the brace members 1718 in position rearwardly of the main legs 1011, and thus support the latter firmly in position, and when the plates are broken upwardly they assume a position face to face and substantially in parallel relations and are received into the pockets or recesses 24: and are thus disposed out of sight and out of the way, and enable the legs 17-18 to fold into relatively close relations to the legs 11-12 and to be partly inclosed by the same as shown in Figs. 3 and 1. By this simple means the legs are closely folded when the device is not in use, or when leaning against a wall. The plates 26 form effectual braces to prevent the accidental collapse of the device when being moved from place to place while at the same time are readily foldable when not in use.

Extending between the leg members 1011, is a combined desk and blackboard member formed with an intermediate body portion 31, and enlarged end members 3283. One face of the body 31 will be employed as a desk, and the other face prowith the legs 1011, one edge of the body 31 will be disposed in close proximity to the lower edge of the scroll frame 12, while the opposite edge of the body will be disposed in close relations to the transverse member 13, as shown in Fig. 3. The rear leg members or braces 1718 are providedwith notches 37 to receive the rear or lower 3 terminals of the members 3233 and thus prevent the combined desk and blackboard i combination of an outer frame including a member from being moved beyond a hori zontal position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, while at the same time free to be moved in the opposite direction, as will be obvious.

Attached to one of the rear leg members, for instance the leg member 18, is a stop member preferably formed of wire, and represented as a whole at 38, and connected in any suitable manner, as for instance by staples 39 to the member 18, and with a lateral offset 40 at the upper end which projects a suflicient distance to support the member 33 in its horizontal position, while at the same time releasable by compressing the same when the combined desk and black board is to be folded. The member 38 being of relatively long inclined shape, will be displaced automatically by the movement of the member 33 when the combined desk and blackboard is adjusted in its horizontal position, but will require to be manually actuated to release the desk and blackboard.

The frame 12 is hollow, and mounted for rotation within the frame are rollers 41l2 spaced apart and adapted to be rotated by handles or knobs iii-14 projecting through the side members 11. The frame 12 is likewise provided with a transverse supporting member 45 whose forward face is in alinement with the forward sides of the rollers. A flexible sheet or web 46 is connected to the rollers and windable from one to the other and designed to contain drawing lessons, penmanship lessons, or other similar matter, and readable through the open front face of the frame. The scroll thus constructed it will be noted, is in convenient position above the blackboard and desk member so that the figures upon the scroll are in convenient position for observation by the student from either the desk or the blackboard portion of the device.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured of any light material, and will be very useful for children in studying drawing or Qpenmanship, and may likewise be employed ,for all the purposes for which an ordinary ,desk is used.

Having thus described the invention, what iis claimed as new is:

In a combined desk and blackboard, the

latter legs to pivotally connect the two frames together, the front edges of the legs of the inner frame having V-shaped notches, the upper walls of said notches being horizontal, said horizontal walls being slightly above the plane of the bottom of the receptacle, a board pivoted to the inner sides of the legs of the outer frame and provided at its two opposite sides with members which extend slightly above the surface of the board, the rear ends of the side members being beveled and fitting in the V-shaped notches when the board is tilted to a horizontal position, the rear portion of the up per surfaceof the board between the members engaging with the bottom of the re ceptacle when the ends of the side members engage in the notches, fastening devices on the front edge of the legs of the inner frame to engage with the underside of the side members to lock the board in horizontal position, and means between the inner and outer legs to prevent the latter moving inward or outward when the board is in a horizontal position.
