Description

UNITED STATES' PATENT 'OFFICE GEORGE W. PLATT, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
COMBI'NATON DESK-EASELAND PENCIL=CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patnt No. 543312, dated .my 30, 1895. Application filed March 29, 1895. Serial No. 543,'7'72. (No model.)
To all whom it may concerm Be it known that- I, GEORGE W. PLATT, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Denver, in the connty of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have in-vented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combina tion Desk-Easel and Pencil-Case; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica-.
tion.
My invention relates to improvements in a combination desk-easel and pencil-case for the use of artists, draftsmen, and students; and it consists of the features hereinafter described andclaimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof. 4
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved device, showing the lid raised and a sheet of drawing-board in position for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinalsection taken through the devicewith the lid raised. Fig. 3 is a similar section with the lid closed. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line cc x, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section taken through the casing and illustrating the two positions of the recesses for the retaining-pins.
Similar reference-characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the body of the case, having areceptacle 5 for pencils and a compartment 7 for smaller articles. Any other desired arrangement with reference to the division of the space within the case may, of course, be made.
As shown in the drawings, the compart ments 6 and 7 are separated by a transverse partition 8.
The lid 9 of the case is hinged toa footblock 10, which has a limited movement within grooves formed in the sides of the case. This movable block is inserted from the rear Where the grooves are open, before the end piece 12 is applied. This part12 maybe fas tened in any suitable manner, and looks the block 10 against removal when the parts are assembledr- The sides of the case are provided with a series of Vertical and inclined recesses 13 and 14, respectively. These recesses have a common opening from which they branch, forming an angle with each other. Retaining-pins 15 are inserted in these recesses. These pins may occupya position perpendicular or inclined to the plane of the case, according as they are inserted in the vertical recesses 13 or the inclined recesses 14. The function of these pins is to retain in place the material 'upon which the artist or other person is work-,
ing. In the drawings '(see Fig. 1) a sheet of card board 20 is shown supported in an inclined position upon the case, the pins 15 being employed to prevent it from sliding downward.
The use of the device is illustrated in Fig. 1. The lid 9 'when raised forms the easelback. In order to raise the lid the foot-block 10 must be moved forward, as shown in Fig; 2, leaving a space to the rear which it enters when the lid is closed. The front extremity of the case is provided with a springcatch 17 for temporarily looking the lid when closed; Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. The combined pencil case and desk easel comprising the case proper, the movable footblock, and the lid hinged to said block, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the case proper having a series of recesses in each side, a nnov` able foot-block, and the lid hinged to said block, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the case proper, the
movable foot-block, the lid hinged' to said block, and the pins adapted to enter apertures in the sides of the case, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. PLATT. Witnesses:
CHAS. E. DAWSON, ALFBED J. O BRIEN.
