W. H. REARDEN.
WRITBRS CABINET.
Patented Aug. 8', 1882.
WITNESSES I IJV'VEJVTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. REARDEN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
WRITERS CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,312, dated August 8, 1882.
Application filed May 13, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. REARDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Writers Cabinets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specific-atoll, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved writers cabinet. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
This invention relates to an improvement. in writers cabinets, having for its object to promote convenience and to fully utilize space; and it consists in a convenient and compact arrangement and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In carrying out my invention I employ a case,"A, made preferably with perpendicular sides and back, a horizontal bottom and top, and a curved or segmental front or cover, B. Thefront or cover B is composed of a series of closely-arranged slats, a, secured upon a highly-flexible back, I), with its ends projecting into and sliding in grooves 0 made in and following the segmental or curved front edges of the sides. Each slat has, for the sake of ornamentation, its upper surface rounded in its transverse plane. The front or cover B has aflixed to it near its lower edge a knob, d, to permit its convenient operation to effect the opening and closing of the cabinet. The groovescare continued in an oppositely-curved direction in the sides of the cabinet, in rear of and underneath the series of shelves which hold the writing utensils, presently described, as seen in Fig. 2.
It will be noticed that, the curved or segmental front or cover being flexible, it will, as it is slid back, by grasping and pressing upward upon the knob (1, follow the curvature of the grooves c and pass into the case until its knob rests against the front edge of the top, and thus permit the opening of the cabinet, exposing its contents, as seen in Fig. 1.
O is a stair-stepped arrangement of shelves,
(No model.)
disposed inside of the case A, with the lower one resting on its bottom at the front end and the succeeding ones receding toward the top, and the upper one secured a sufficient distance below the top to provide a space large enough for the passage of the front or cover B, as seen in I Fig. 2. In the upper surfaces of these shelves are cavities of g h, suitably shaped. to receive and hold the inkstands, spongccups, penholders, scissors, crasers, pen-wipers, paperfasteners, and pencils, or other belongings of a writers cabinet. In the front surfaces of two or more or less number of the steps are secured pin-cushions i and bracketsj for bolding rulers, sealiug-wax,&c. This arrangement is a great convenience for the orderly placing and keeping of the writers utensils, which are also capable of being protected from dust, &c., by closing the cover B when cleaning the office or leaving at night.
Upon each side of the case A is arranged a pocket, D, (only one being shown,) having a. supplemental chamber, D, provided with a vertical slot, It, at about its middle. This pocket is to hold paper, and has a cover, D which, when removed, is slipped into the chamber D, its handle resting in the slot It to have it conveniently near by for readily closing the pocket after taking out the necessary paper. One or the other of these pockets may be subdivided to suit different sized paper.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a writers cabinet, the combination, with its case A, of the attached pocket D, having the supplemental cham ber D, provided with a vertical slot, 70, and the. cover D, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the writers cabinet herein described, consisting of the case A, having the cover B, and a stair-stepped arrangement of shelves, 0, provided with cavities or means adapted to hold the various articles or utensils herein described, the pocket I), and supplemental chamber D k, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\NILL'IAM H. REARDEN.
