PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM J. LARGE, OF SOUTH BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT `IN TRUNKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,035, dated May 19, 1874; application filed April 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. LARGE, of South Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in` Trunks, of which the following is a specification:
.Figure l is a vertical cross-section of a trunk to which my improvement has been applied, taken through the line :c x, Fig. 2, the trunk being shown opened. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken x through the line y y, Fig. 1, the trunk being shown closed. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section of the slide, taken through the line z z, Fig.l.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of trunks in such a way that the operation of opening the trunk will raise the till, so as to give convenient access to the body of the trunk beneath said till, and that the trunk may be conveniently used as a writing-desk, and which shall be simple in construction, and will take up but little of the space ofthe trunk. The invention consists `in the combination of the slides, the ways,
the pivoted. arms, and the slotted and notched lock-bar with the body, the lid, and the till of the trunk; and in the combination of the ways, the slides, and the writing desk or table with the till of a trunk, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the body ot' the trunk, to which the lid B is hinged in the ordinary manner. C is the till of the trunk, to the middle parts of the ends of which are attached the upper ends of the bars D, which slide up and down in ways in the inner edges of the cleats E, attached to the ends of the trunk-body A. To the lower part of the slides D are pivoted the lower ends of the arms F, the upper ends of which arehpivoted to the ends of the trunk-lid B, so that, by raising the lid B to ropen the trunk, the till C will also be raised, as shown in Fig. 1, giving convenient access to the interior of the trunk-body. G is a short bar or plate, the upper end of which is pivoted to the rear part ofthe end of the trunk-lidB.
The bar Gr is slotted longitudinally to receive a screw, H, att-ached to the end of the trunkbody A. In the bar G, at the upper side of the lower end of its slot, is formed a transverse notch, which, when the lid B is raised, drops over the screw II, to support the said lid B and the till or tray G raised. I are plates, made of thin sheet metal or other suitable material, and attached to the cleats E, to prevent any ofthe contents of the trunk from getting' into the space between said cleats when the slides D are raised, and impeding, and being injured by, the descent of the slides D. If desired, the upward movement ot' the slides D maybe limited by stop pins or screws attached to the said slides D, and which strike against bars attached to the upper ends ofthe cleats E. To theforward side ot' the till G are attached cleats J, in the adjacent edges of each pair ot' which are formed ways to receive the edges of the slides K, to the upper ends of which is hinged the forward edgeof the plate L, which is designed to serve as a writing desk or table, and the rear edge of which, when raised into position for use, may be supported by the front side of the trunk-lid B, or by other convenient means. In the middle part of the writing-desk L is formed 'a door, l', to give convenient access to the interior of the till G when desired. The slides K are secured at any elevation by the bars or plates M, attached to the cleats J, and the set-screws N, attached to the slides K, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the slidesv D, ways E, pivoted arms F, and slotted and notched lock-bar G with the body A, lid B, and till O of a trunk, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination ofthe ways J, slides K, and writing desk or table L with the till O ot' the trunk, substantially as herein shown and described.
