Description
N. J. REVES.
HAT BOX.
APPLICATION FILED 05c. 12.- 1916.
1 $62,095; Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
-NANCY J. REVES, OF BOOSTER, ARKANSAS.
HAT-BOX.
Application filed December 12, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NANCY J. REvns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Booster, in the county of Searcy and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hat boxes, and has for its object the provision of a simple, durable and eflicient box having a hinged door therein so located that the same can be conveniently and expeditiously moved to open or closed position if the box should happen to be located beneath other boxes or articles without necessitating the removal of the box from position.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of the box with the door closed, and showing the position assumed by the door while in closed position,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the box,
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the box with the door open,
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the box, showing the door in partially open position, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view, taken through one of the side walls and one end of the door.
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view through the open side of the box to illustrate the manner in which the doors are arranged.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates the hat box as an entirety, the said box including a stationary bottom, rear and opposite side walls, the top of the box being closed by means of a removable lid 1 that has depending flanges 2 formed on the opposite side and rear edges thereof and engaging over the adjacent walls of the box, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A channel bar 3 is mounted on the lower wall of the box and located at the forward end thereof and extends throughout the width of the lower wall in a diagonal plane and is U-shaped incross section, and a vertically disposed channel bar 4 is mounted on Specification of Letters Patent.

the inner surface of one of the side walls at the forward end thereof and has the lower end of the channel therein communicating with the channel in the bar 3. The outer surface of the bar 4 lies flush with the adjacent ends of the side wall and bottom wall of the box. The front of the box is normally closed by means of a door 5, wh'ch has hinged connection with the side wall opposite the one provided with the channel bar 4 by means of hinges 6, which are formed of flexible material. When the door 5 is in closed position, the lower edge'and' the free end thereof are received, respectively by the channel bars 3 and 4, as shown'more particularly in Fig. 2 of the drawing. By virtue of the fact that the outer wall of the channel bar 4 is flush with the adjacent edges of the walls of the box and the diagonal arrangement of the bar 3, the door 5 when in closing position will be at different angles with relation to the walls of the box, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The door 5 is formed preferably of pasteboard, or similar flexible material, so as to admit of the door being flexed so that it can be conveniently inserted within the lower channel bar 3 and moved to closing position, or removed therefrom. When it is desired to open the door, the door is slid outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4, the hinges 6 permitting this operation to be performed. During the outward sliding movement of the door 5 the same is gradually brought from beneath the forward end of the lid 1,-
as shown in Fig. 4, and the door can then be raised vertically out of the channel bar 3 and thence swung to the position shown in Fig. 3, so that access can be had to the interior of the box. Likewise, when it is desired to close the door the free end of the same is inserted within the channel bar 3 and thence slid to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A suitable knob 7 is secured to the door 5, adjacent the free end thereof, to admit of the door being conveniently moved to open or closed position.
The lid 1 is normally held in position on the top of the box by means of suitable strings 8, which have connection with the opposite side walls of the box and are adapted to have their free ends secured to each other at a point above the lid 1, as shown in Fig. 2.
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, is:
l. A hat box including a bottom wall, side walls and a rear end wall, a channel bar mounted on the bottom wall of the box at the forward edge thereof and arranged in a diagonal plane to extend at one end slightly beyond the forward edge of the bot tom wall, a door normally closing the front of the box and having its lower edge slidably received by the channel bar the arrangement of the bar permitting the door to be readily slid into open and closed position and hinges formed on the flexible material connecting the door to one side wall of the box.
2. A box including a bottom wall, side walls and a rear end wall, a lid closing the top ofthe box and having depending flanges Copies of this patent may be obtained for the end wall of the box, a channel bar mounted on the bottom wall at the forward end thereof and arranged in a diagonal plane with relation to the forward edge of the bottom wall, a vertically disposed channel bar mounted on one of the side walls of the box and having the lower end of the channel therein communieating with the channel in the first-mentioned bar, and a door slidably mounted within the channel in the first mentioned bar and adapted, when in closed position, to
have one endrthereof received by the chan- V nel in the second mentioned bar.
In testimony whereof I aflix my slgnature in presence of two wltnesses.
NANCY J. Rnvns.
