To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and the State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial- Oaskets, of which the following is a clear and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in burial caskets, and in particular to those opening on the side, and my object, broadly speaking, is to provide a convenient means whereby the side may be opened and at the same time allowing said side to be slid easily and quickly to a position inside, of the casket, where it remains out of sight and out ofthe Way when not in use.
More particularly, my object is to provide a burial casket, in which the side is hinged and swings down, and when in a horizontal position, may be slid into an opening between the bottom and false bottom erected therein. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure I is a vertical section of my casket; Fig. II is a vertical section showing side open and placed out of sight between the bottom and false bottom; Fig. III is a part of a section taken lengthwise of the casket; Fig. IV and Fig. V, are details of the catch, which is provided to take the strain off of the hinges, caused by the weight when casket is being carried. Figs. VI, VII and VIII, are views in detail of the hinged and pivotal connection of the sideof the casket to the base thereof.

Referring now to the drawings, 10 denotes the hinged side of the casket, 11 the false bottom, 12 the bottom proper, 18 the top of the casket, hinged at 23, 17 a portion of the side, hinged at 2l that it may swing down to he position indicated in dotted view in 22 is a portion of the base mold hinged at 24, that it may swing away from the body of the casket, as indicated by dotted lines, thus uncovering the opening between 11 and 12, into which the side 10, slides. Hinged to the bottom of 10, is a sliding portion 16, which serves the purpose of a sliding plate which is movable in the guide slot 13, provided in the respective ends of the casket.
14 is a roller placed in the ends of the casket as indicated in the drawing, and serves the double purpose of a roller and su port for the side, 10 where it is placed in t e opening between the false bottom and bottom, 11 and 12, respectively. The portion a on the side, 10 comes into use when the side is open, by providing a finished appearance, to what would otherwise be an open space between the false bottom 11, and the base mold 22.
17 in this particular design, is hinged at 21 in order that it may swing back out of the way of the base mold 22, when the latter is swung to its proper position after the side 10 is slid into the opening between the two bottoms, before described. A plate 25 having a pin 25a Fig. IV is fastened to the bottom at each edge of side 10 and a plate 26 having the notch 26a Fig .V is secured in both ends of the casket so that when the side 10 is in a vertical position the in 25A of plate 25 engages in the slot 26a o plate 26.

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A burial casket provided with a bottom and a false bottom spaced therefrom to form a recess to receive the side of the casket and having therein a sliding late hinged to the side and movable in gui e slots provided in the respective ends of the casket.
2. A burial casket provided with a hinged side capable of being incased within a recess provided in the bottom of the casket, said side having a plate su porting a pin fastened to the lower ortion of each end, said pin engaging in a slotted plate fastened to the respective ends of the casket.
3. The herein-described burial casket having a bottom, a side and two ends fixed in relation to the bottom, a false bottom above and spaced apart from the bottom forming a recess for the side, the side fitted to be incased in said recess, and a base mold hinged to the bottom and adjustable to positions to cover or expose the o ening to the side containing the recess, a l substantially as set forth.
