Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES C. HENDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oceanpark, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bath-Cabinets, of which the following, is a specification.

This invention relates to bath cabinets used to provide a receptacle to subject a patient to medicated vapors, and the principal object is to provide such a cabinet with a hinged wall as well as an adjustable slidable cover.

It is a further object to provide such a cabinet with means for readily entering from the side, together with closures permitting the use of the patients hands and introducing objects within the chamber without disturbing the patient.

In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming therewith the application for Letters Patent: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the cabinet in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the front of the cabinet, showing the same with the doors in open position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the cabinet, showing the modified form of the slide to which is hinged the top door. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the modification shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the pivoted locking latch.

More specifically in the drawings, 6 designates the base or floor of the cabinet, on which are erected the end walls 7 and 8 and the rear wall 9, the wall forming the front being divided and formed of two sections 10 and 11 intermediate of which is an opening provided for the door 12. This door is preferably hinged on the wider section 10 by suitable hinges 14, these members, together with the closures forming the top, complete the cabinet.

The closures forming the top consist of a plurality of movable and fixed members, the first of which 15 is a thin plate of wood of less width than the front section 10 provided with a substantially semi circular opening 16 extending from its inner edge outward toward the edge engaging the wall 8. Oppositely disposed from this plate is a shelf 17 supported a distance below the upper surface of the cabinet equal to the thickness of the sliding plate 18, which is adapted to be supported on the shelf 17,

and the shelf 19 secured to the rear wall 9 a distance below the plate 15 equal to onehalf of the thickness of the plate 18 so that the reduced end of this plate may be engaged and slide under the plate 15.

As stated above the end of the sliding plate 18 nearest the plate 15 is reduced in thickness to slide under the plate 15, as is also the door 20 hinged by means of hinges 21 to the inner edge of the plate. This door is of a width equal to the distance from the inner edge of the plate 17 to the front walls and is adapted to make a tight fit with the front door 12 and the adjoining walls, and its reduced portion 22 is cut out at the point 23 similar to the opening 16 and adapted to register therewith so that the opening may be adjusted to accommodate different sized necks introduced therein without interposition of flexible attachments. The door 20 is also provided with an opening 2 1 closed by a hinged door 25 secured to the end face of the same. A suitable handle 26 is provided to operate the door from the inside and a handle or knob 27 to operate the same eXteriorly. To look the door 12 a latch 28 is provided pivoted on the bracket 29, the latch engaging with the strike 30 being preferably mounted upon the door 12. This door being also shown as having a double wall 31 forms at its upper edge a stop for the door 20 and the overlapping portion 32 closes the slot adjacent the hinges, and the batten 33 forms a stop to close the opening adjacent thereto.

Figs. 3 and 1 are modifications as shown, in which the door 20 is hinged to a transversely disposed plate 35 mounted on the shelf 36 occupying the same position in the cabinet as the plate 17 suitable metal plates 37 being secured to the upper edge of the cabinet so that a guide-way is formed for the edges of the plate 35 to retain the latter in fixed position when the door is open.

The operation of the device will be readily understood. \Vith the closures in position shown in Fig. 3 the patient enters the cabinet and sits on a seat, not shown, placing the back of the neck in the opening 16 and against the outer edge thereof. The door 12 is now closed, the door 20 dropped to its lowered position, and at this point where it engages with the shelf 17, the upper edges of the batten 33 and the wall 31 on the door 12 the same can be moved in the direction indicated by the arrow until the inner end of the opening 23 is brought close enough to the neck of the individual so as to form a sufficiently tight opening to prevent the escape of vapors, but not to be uncomfortable to the individual. Medication as desired may now be introduced into the cabinet through the opening 24:, or the patient may use this opening to receive objects or project the hands for any purpose. The fixtures are such that the control can be entirely at the volition of the patient so that accidents are not liable to occur.

What I claim is: v

A bath cabinet, comprising a chamber formed by suitable Walls, a top, a section having a slotted opening adapted to form a portion of the top closure of said chamber, a shelf oppositely disposed from said fixed section, a movable member adapted to slide on said shelf and under said fixed section, and an apertured door secured to said sliding member and adapted to slide under said fixed section whereby a complete closure is formed, except for a proper and adjustable neck opening formed by the registering openings in said door and said fixed section.
