Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filed March 4, 1918. Serial No. 220,305.
To all whom it may concer/n Be it known that we, GEORGE KUPEO and JOHN SLosan. subjects of the King of Hungary, residing at New Salem, in thc county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Top Constructions` of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a top member for such stoves as kitchen ranges, the same being arranged for readily cleaning the upper `portion of the stove and also providing a locking section preventing accidental displacement of such section.
A further object of the device is to provide a stove top with means for readily obtaining access to the interior of a stove but preventing children from opening the stove to throw articles therein, the structure being easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a top member for kitchen stoves adapted for permitting ready access to substantially the entire upper interior portion of the stove while also arranging for the accommodation of the usual circular lids, a locking section being also provided for the top readily secured against accidental displacement when desired.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken upon line II-II of Fig. 1`
Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof,
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a forward portion of the saine with the locking section open and Fig. 5 is au inverted perspective view of the locking section detached.
Our stove top 10 is herein illustrated substantially rectangular in form mounted upon a box stove 11, such as a kitchen range. The top 10 is preferably formed of a substantially square rear section 12 and a smaller forward section 13 secured thereto by screws 14.
A rectangular opening 15 is arranged sub stantially centrally through the top 10 arranged with a ledge 16 upon which three similar panels 17, 18 and 19 are removably seated transversely of the top 10. The said panels are arranged with overlapping edges at their meeting points 20 `so that gas-tight joints are formed between the panels and the sections 12 and 13 as well as between the respective panels themselves.
Longitudinal strengthening ribs 21 are provided upon the bottoms of the panels 17 1S and 19 for preventing the panels from warping while similar transverse ribs 22 are provided for the panels 17 and 1S. Circular lids 23 are removably arranged within circular openings 24 of the panels 17 and 18 in the manner usually employed with a stove top'while the rear panel 19 is retained in its entirety.
The forward top section 13 has opposite curved forward edges 25 and is arranged with a rectangular opening or inlet 26 through which articles may bereadily placed in the fire boX port-ion 27 of the stove 11. A ledge 28 is provided around the opening 26 for slidably accommodating a door 29 thereon, it being understood that the said door may be slidably moved by means of the knobs 30 for opening and closing the inlet 26 at will.
End strips 31 upon the door 29 are adapted for positioning within slots 32 adjacent the ends of the opening 26 for preventing the door 29 from being lifted upwardly off of the ledge 28. The forward end 33 of the section 13 forwardly of the opening 26 is provided with a turn bolt 34 centrally journaled therein with a handle 35 at its lower end and with a transverse head 36 at its opposite end. A transverse groove 37 is arranged in the under side of the dooi 29 adapted for receiving the head 36 when the said head is arranged in one position and at which times the door may be readily slid forwardly and outwardly upon the front member 33.
.An enlargement 38 is provided for the groove 37 at the forward edge of the door 29 adapted for permitting the head 36 to be rotated across the adjacent open end of the groove 37 engaging the shoulders 39 at the end of the groove for preventing the outward movement of the door 29 and locking the door closed over the opening 26. The door 29 may be readily locked by turning the handle 35 when the door is closed for preventing children and other persons from sliding the door to its open position for inserting articles into the stove 27 through the inlet open ing 26 thereof. The handle 35 may be readily slid to its open arrangement when found desirable. A serviceable stove top is provided in which the panels 17, 1S and 19 may be readily removed for providing an enlarged opening into the stove 11 while the said panels are interchangeable and the closed panel 19 .may be positioned intermediate the lid carrying' panels 17 and 18 if 'found desirable.
