UNITED. STATES- PATENT oFFIoE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1906.
Application filed July 19,1905. Serial No. 270,424.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST V. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Chests, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in tool-chests designed for the convenient reception of mechanics tools.
The main object of the present invention is the production of a chest of the character described which shall be particularly constructed to provide for the reception and storage of desired tools and to permit ready access to the tools desired.
The preferred details of structure of my invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of a chest constructed in accordance with my invention, all parts being shown open. of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that my improved chest comprises a base or bottom 1 and a rear wall 2, extending at right angles to the base and of the desired height of the chest. The front wall 3 is hinged at its lower end of the forward edge of the bottom, so that said front wall may be turned down in practical alinement with the base. The sides 4 and 5 of the box are hinged at 6 to the side edges of the rear wall and are adapted to swing out in practical alinement with said rear wall when the box is to be opened. The cover 7, of the usual hollow construction, is hinged at 7 to the upper edge of the rear wall and is of a sectional dimension to include the side walls and front wall, so that when said walls are in closed position and the cover lowered or closed the-upper edges of said side walls and frontwall will fit within the cover and be thereby held against opening movement, as is obvious.
Within the cover I secure an additional rechest proper, constructed in its lower half to Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
receive a plurality of drawers 9, an open space practically coextensive with the drawer being provided below the lower drawer, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The section above the upper drawer may be left hollow to provide a receptacle 10, to be closed by a lid comprising a fixed section 11 and a movable or hinged section 12, the latter section being hinged to the fixed section and vided between the receptacle 8v and the sideand front walls of the main or outer box.
By this construction I provide additional receiving-space for tools of a character not ordinarily receivable within the drawers 9 or within the space 10 and provide for theready access to these respective spaces by the hinging of the sides and front of the outer chest. I am also enabled to utilize the side walls of the receptacle 8 for hanging various tools for which provision is not ordinarily made in chests of this character, and through the medium of the movable sides and front of the outer chest I thoroughly protect these tools against loss or moisture;
From the foregoing description it willbe noted that my invention, in effect, comprises a tool-chest proper, provided with a plurality of drawers inclosed on all sides by a cover composed of a plurality of sections having hinged connection with each other and adapted to be swung to open position to completely expose the contained tool.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tool-chest comprising a box having a relatively fixed rear wall and bottom, side walls hinged to the rear wall to open'in alinement therewith, a front wall hinged to the bottom to open in alinement therewith, and
a receptacle secured to the rear wall of the side wall and front wall when in closed p0sibox and of less length and width than the tion. 10 box, whereby to provide a space between the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature side walls of said receptacle and the side walls in presence of two witnesses.
of the box, and a space between the front ERNST V. HILL.
wall of the receptacle and the front wall of Witnesses: 1 the box, and a cover hinged to the rear wall HERMAN J. MILLER,
and adapted to fit over the upper edges of the HENRY C. RIoKHEIT.
