Description

(No Model.)
N. LARSON. COAL AND WOOD BOX.
No. 564,382. Patented July 21, 1896.
UNirfEn STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
NILS LARSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COAL AND`WOOD BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,382, dated July 21, 1896.
Application filed September 4, 1895. Serial No. 561,405. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ wwht it puny concern.-
Be it known that I, NILS LARSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal and Wood Boxes or Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters-of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to coal and wood boxes or receptacles; and the object thereof is to provide an efficient box or receptacle for this purpose which is simple in construc` tion and which may also be made as ornamental as desired, and by means of which the dirt or dust, so common where coal is used in compartments or rooms of dwelling-houses, is almost entirely avoided.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved box or receptacle 3 Fig. 2, a central vertical section on the line 2 2, and Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention I employ a box or receptacle A, which is preferably formed of wood, which is rectangular in form, and provided with an ornamental basemold ing B and an ornamental hinged top or cover C, said top or cover being hinged at I) and adapted to fold backward.
Vithin the upper portion of the box or receptacle is placed a tray E, which may be of any desired size or depth, and which is intended to hold wood for kindling or other purposes.
NVithin the central, lower, and front bottom portion of the box or receptacle is a door F, which is hinged at the bottom thereof, as shown at G, and opens outwardly and downwardly, and said door is provided with a central .chamber G, or with side grooves adapted to receive rollers H, which are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and in full lines in Fig. 2, said rollers being connected with side boards K, which are pivotally connected at L with a plate M, the inner side of which is pivotally connected at N with the bottom of the box or receptacle, or with shoulders n., connected therewith.
' At each side of the plate M are side boards fm, and formed in each of the front or forward corners of the box or receptacle, at each side of the plate M, are box-shaped partitions, on the inner side of which rests the inner edge of an inclined plate P, and placed in the rear corners of the box and adjacent to the boxshaped partitions are triangular blocks R, the upper surfaces of which are curved from the top of the box-shaped partitions O to the bottom S of the box or receptacle.
The lower portion of the box or receptacle A is designed for receiving coal, and the object of the box-shaped partitions O and the inclined surfaces of the blocks R is to direct the coal into the bottom space S of the box or receptacle, and the obj ect of the inclined plate P, which extends across the box from one side to the other and is connected with the front thereof, is to prevent the coal from falling directly upon the plate M.
The door F is provided with a spring-operated latch T, and when the door is let down or opened outward, as hereinbefore described, the plate M moves downwardly until it rests upon or in proximity to the floorcf the box or receptacle, this operation being made possible by means of the rollers H, which move in the slots at the side of the door or in the central cavity or chamber G, formed therein, and when the door F and the plate M are thus let down, a shovel of proper size may be introduced for withdrawing the coal, as will be readily understood, and when the door is again raised to the position shown in Fig. 2 the plate M will also be again raised and the iine coal or dust thereon will slide back into the rear portion of the box or re ceptacle.
Insteadof employing the rollers H, I may substitute therefor ordinary hooks or pro- .jections, which will -extend into the cavity or chamber G or intothe grooves formed in the sides of the door, and which would 0perate substantially the same, as herein described.
It will thus be seen that I accomplish the IOO object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation, and Well adapted to produce the result for which it is intended, and which may also be made so as to be attractive in appearance and constitute an ornamental piece of furniture.
My improved box or receptacle may also be provided with rollers or casters, as shown in Figs. l and 2, if desired; and it is evident that other changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I therefore rcserve the right to make all such alterations and changes therein as fairly come Within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The box or receptacle for coal herein shown and described, having in the front bottom portion thereof, a door adapted to open dmvnwardly and outwardly, a plate extending inwardly from said door, and the inner edge of whichis hinged to the bottom of the box or receptacle, and the outer end oi which is connected with said door, so as to slide thereon, and be lowered thereby, when the door is opened, and raised thereby, when the door is shut, substantially as shown and described.
2. The box or receptacle .for coal herein shown and described, having in the front bottom portion thereof, a door adapted to open downwardly and outwardly, a plate extending inwardly from said door, and the inner edge of which is hinged to the bottom of the 'box or receptacle, and the outer end of which is connected with said door, so as to slide thereon, and be lowered thereby, When the door is opened, and raised thereby, When the door is shut, said box or receptacle being provided With box-shaped partitions in the cor- .ners adjacent to said plate, approximately to NILS LARSON. lilitiiesses:
