B. M. BIXBY.
BIN.
No. 561,644. Patented June 9, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUFUS M. BIXBY, OF FOSTER, IOW'A.
BIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,644, dated June 9, 1896.
Application filed September 7,1396. $erial No. 561,843. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, Runes M. BIXBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Foster, in the county of Monroe and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bins; andl do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to drawers or bins.
The object of the invention is to provide a drawer or bin especially designed for the storage of nails, and which will'allow the storekeeper to remove the nails from in front of the counter or while behind the counter, thus obviating the necessity of the storekeeper walking from one side of the counter to the other for the purpose of removing the nails, for if he be on the outside of the counter and desires to remove nails he may have access to them at that point, or should he be behind the counter he will have equal access to them at that point.
With these objects in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a counter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 2. Fig. etis a detail perspective of one of the drawers or bins removed. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of one of the guide-strips.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the uprights of the counter, and 2 the top. The front and rear uprights are connected by cross-bars 3.
i denotes the guides, each of which preferably consists of a strip of metal having at its ends upwardly-extending lips 5, which projectjhrough horizontal slits (3, formed in the faces of the plates 6, having flanges 6, which are secured to the posts or uprights above mentioned. The side edges of these strips are bent upward and then downward to form smooth guide ribs or flanges 7.
8 denotes the drawers or bins, which may be arranged in the counter inbanks, as shown, the drawings, however, illustrating but two drawers. Each of these drawers is composed of abottom 9, flaring sides 10, having their upper edges bent over to form grooves 11, which engage the flanges '7 of the guides, and the ends 12, the rear one of which is integral with the body and cut away to form an enlarged recess 13, while the forward end of the drawer is preferably made of wood, which may be suitably ornamented, and which in the present instance is in the form of apanel. These drawers fit in the counter one above the other and are adapted to contain the nails.
Should the Storekeeper be behind the counter when a purchaser enters, he may remove the nails from that point by simply inserting the nail-prongs into the drawer or bin through the recess in its rear end; or should the storekeeper be on the outside of the counter he may easily draw the bin out and remove the nails without taking the time and trouble to go around behind the counter. Bins thus constructed will be found to be of great convenience to the storekeeper and will obviously save much space, time, and labor.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of my invention will be readily understood without requiring further explanation.
The counter and bin may be constructed at a very small cost and will present a very ornamental and finished appearance.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, the front and rear uprights of a counter, plates secured thereto and provided with horizontal slits, strips having at their sides upwardly-extending flanges and at their ends lips which project through the slits, and a bin having an opening in its rear wall and provided at its upper edge with guide-grooves which engage the said guideilanges, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUFUS M. BIXBY. Witnesses A. '1. BoULns, M. XV. HIGKENLOOPER.
