J. D. ELLIS. SVHBBTMETAL B0X.
'Patented July 31, 1894.
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT i OFFICE.
JOHN D. ELLIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 'TO GEORGE D. ELLIS & SONS COMPANY, OFPENNSYLVANIA.
SHEET-METAL Box.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,852, dated July 31,1894.
Application filed February 10, 1894. Serial No. 499,713. (No model.)
To all whom/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN D. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Sheet-Metal Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Figure l represents a perspective view of a sheet metal box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents alongitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a bottom plan view of the lid and top of the box. Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section of a portion of the lid and top, the lid being raised. Fig. 5 represents a section of a portion ofa box, as heretofore constructed. Fig. 4% represents a section of a'portion on line cc, Fig. 3, on `an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
In boxes more particularly designed for safe deposit vaults, the knuckles which form the hinges of the lids thereof are liable to rise, and buckle or form shoulders, which when the boxes are pushed into the vaults,'
or the boxes are so full as to raise the lid, abut against the front ends of the vaults, as shown in Fig. 5, and thus prevent the full entrance of the box, necessitating partial withdrawal ofthe box and forcing down the lid. My invention is designed to remedy this defect, and consists in applying a stop to the front of the knuckle on the under side of the lid, so that the latter is prevented from rising, while the hinge is fully preserved.
In the drawings: A designates the body of the box; B the stationary plate of the top thereof, and C the lid which is hinged to said portion, the hinge consisting of the looped knuckle D, and the rods or pintles E and F, Within rthe samertherodE being tit-ted in the eyes G secured to the plate B, and the rod F being tted in the eyes H secured to the lid C, it being noticed that the contiguous edges of the plate B and lid are'c'ut away, forming the recess J, which is occupied by the upper portion of the knuckle.
K designates a crossbar which is secured againstthe lid, so that the rearward thrust of the lid is controlled. By this provision, When the lid is pushed back it presses against the bar, thelatter thus providing a stop or barrier which prevents the inner end of said lid from rising, and causes it to maintain a right line with the knuckle, as will be most plainly seen in Fig. 2, while the hinge of the lid is preserved, and in fact strengthened, as unnecessary play of the lid is prevented while being raised,.a`s will be seen in Fig. 4.`
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box having a pintle secured to a stationary part thereof, a lid having a pintle secured thereto, and a loop embracing said pintles said loopV working in recesses in said lid and stationary part, said parts being cornbined substantially as described.
2. A box having a stationarytop part, a lid, and ahinge for said lid formed of a looped knuckle, and pintles inl said knuckle, one of which is fitted in eyes secured to the said lid, in combination with a stop which is secured to the front of said knuckle on the under side of the lid, substantially as described.
3. A box having a lid with a pintle connected therewith, a pintle secured to a stationary part of the box, a loop knuckle embracing said pintles, and a cross bar connected with said knuckle at the front thereof, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4. A box having a stationary top part, a lid with a pintle secured thereto, a pintle secured to said stationary part, a looped knuckle Aembracing said pintles anda cross bar on said knuckle below said lid, said stationary part and lid having recesses in which the upper part of the knuckle islocated, said parts being combinedV substantially as described.
JOHN D.` ELLIS.
