UNITED STATES PATENT orrion.
BAGGAGE.
Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1905.
Application filed June 9, 1905. Serial No. 264,471.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STAN CHRISTIE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baggage; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of baggage of the kind commonly known as suit-cases? and it consists in such a case having certain novel features hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed, the principal novel feature being the lid of the suit-case comprising continuous pliant material on a pair of frames, each of which is arranged and connected to be swung independent of the other on the same center to open a portion of said case.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective View of a fragment of a suit-case made in accordance with my invention and having a portion of its lid swung up; Fig. 2, an end elevation of the same; and Fig. 3, a partly-sectional view of said fragment of the suit-case, the section being indicated by line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the body, and B the lid, of a suit-case. The major portion of the lid is of pliant material and continuous on two frames C D, that are herein shown as being provided with ears 0 (Z, respectively, loose on round ends of an otherwise preferably angular rod E, that extends longitudinally of the case and is supported on the body-frame of said case and in The rod not only serves as pivots for the ears 0 d of the lid frame sections C D, but it also serves to stiffen the suit-case. However, the important feature of my invention is the lid of said case, comprising a major portion of pliant material continuous on a pair of frames that are in hinge connection with said body-frame of the aforesaid case to swing independent of one another, whereby a portion of the baggage may be opened, and when said baggage is closed there will be no crack in said lid. Hence there is an exclusion of dirt and weather from the closed baggage.
It is preferred to have one of the lid-frames smaller than the other, as is herein shown, and to provide the body of the suit-case with a tray F, to which access is had when the smaller portion of said lid is lifted. The tray is intended for collars, cufis, handkerchiefs, and other small articles of frequent need, and said tray being shallow access is had to the space under the same when the larger section of said lid is lifted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A piece of baggage of the suit-case type having a rod crossing the body of same, a pair of frames each having ears for which the ends of the rod serve as pintles, and a continuous pliable cover on the frames.
2. A piece of baggage of the suit-case type having the body thereof provided with brackets, a rod engaging the brackets, a pair of frames having ears for which the ends of the rod serve as pintles, and a continuous pliant cover on the frames.
3. A piece of baggage of .the suit-case type having the body thereof provided with pivots, a pair of frames having ears loose on the pivots, and a continuous pliant cover on the frames.
4.. A piece of baggage of the suit-case type having the body thereof provided with pivotsupporting brackets, a pair of frames having ears loose on the pivots, and a continuous pliant cover on the frames.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
STAN CHRISTIE.
