Description

I A. BOMADKA.
Trunk Hing-es and Stays. N0,158,3|7, I l Y Patented Dem- 29,1874.
wnmzs sza INVENTOR;
UNITED STATES PATENT L ANTHONY BOMADKA, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO ROMADKA BROTHERS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNK HINGES AND STAYS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 158,317, dated December 29, 1874 application filed October 5, 1874.
l upon a trunk opened, showing its operation;
Fig. 2, a side View of the same on a trunk closed; and Fig. 3, a rear view of the parts of my device separate from the trunk.
The object of my invention is to produce a self-supportin g hinge and clamp combined for trunks that shall consist of only two parts, so constructed that, when applied,they will serve as clamps and supporting-hinges for the lid or cover when thrown back, and also will serve to prevent any lateral motion of the parts of the trunk when closed. Another special object is to so construct the parts that the strain will come upon the strengthened parts of the clamps when the top of the trunk is thrown back. It consists in casting the upper clamp with a strengthening-bulb and a reentering pin, all in one piece; also, in casting the lower clamp with a similar strengtheninghulb, a flange on the rear side, and socketed bulb for receiving the pin on the upper clamp, in one piece.
In the drawings, D and O are the two parts or clamps thus constructed. The upper part, 0, is cast in the form of a corner clamp with a strengtheningbulb, F, as shown in all the figures, and with a re-entering pin, a, as shown in Fig. 3. The lower part, D, is cast in like form, with strengtheningbulb G, flange E,
lip b, and socketed bulb c, for receiving the mentoring pin a, as shown in the same figure. Thus constructed they are applied and attached to the parts of a trunk, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which it willbe seen they clamp the corners and serve as hinges.
When the lid or top of the trunk is thrown back the swell upon the upper clamp bears upon the flange upon the lower but in such a way as to bring the principal strain at the corners, at the same time supporting the cover, as shown in Fig. 1.
When the lid or cover is closed the lip b enters inside of the upper clamp, and thus, in
combination with the outer end of the socket c, and the inner shoulder of the mentoring pin, prevents any lateral movement of the parts.
It is obvious that the parts may be cast of any size and of any suitable material, and that their inner surface may be cast to conform to the outer surface of the trunk, as shown at c, Fig. 1, and thus be made'to bear upon an y desired portion.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- l. The combination of the clamp 0, cast with a strengthening-bulb and the re-entering pin, and the clamp I), cast with a similar bulb, a supporting-flange, and socketed bulb, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a combined clamp-hinge for trunks, the re-entering pin a and socketed bulb 0, when cast with the parts of the same, as and for the purpose set forth.
