such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanylng drawlngs, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v i
The present mventlon relates, generally,
' to improvements in bag-frames; and, this lnvention has reference, more 'particularly,{
to a novel construction of hingelessbagframe for hand-bags, satchels, travelingbags, shoppingbags and the like. a
The invention has for its principal object to provide a simple, strong and durable hingeless bag-frame provided with means for strengthening the frame-members and assuring their proper cooperation and association when the said frame-members are, vbrought into their closed relation, the said frame-members being so associated, when closed, as to prevent v the frame-members from sagging away from each other at their free ends, or becoming bent or misshapened.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a construction of hingeless bagframe which may serve to suspend the body of the bag in such a manner as to distribute the weight of the bag and itscontents evenly throughout the length of both, frame-members,--this being accomplished by so interconnecting or interlocking the framemembers when in their closed relation that the inner frame-member is supported with relation to the outer frame-1nember at its ends, and not solely by the lock-mechanism as has heretofore been the practice in this type of bag frame, this latter'practice being objectionable in that it'permitted the ends of the inner frame-member to sag away from the outer frame-member, and the whole weight of one side of the bag to be supported merely by the hasps of the-lockemechanism.
Other objects of this invention not at this time-more particularly enumerated will be understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.

The reference charactersfi and 6 indicate the side-sections of the bag-body, and the reference character 7 indicates the end-sections of the bag-body, which are stitched, or otherwise securedto the said side-sections. The upper, marginal edge '8 of the side-section6 of thebag-body is laid against the inner side of said vertical flange-portion 30f edge 8 and vertical flange-portion 3 to thereby secure one side-section 6 of the bag-body to said outer frame-member; and the upper marginal edge 8 of the side-section 6 of the bag-body is laid against the inner side of said vertical flange-portion 5 of said inner frame-member and an inlay-plate 11 is laidagainst the same, and then rivets 12, or other suitable fastening means, are passed through said inlay-plate 11, marginal edge-8 and vertical flange-portion 5 to thereby secure the other side section 6 of the bag-bodyto said inner frame-member. The end-sections 7 of said bagbody are provided in their upper parts with a gusseted-portion 13 which folds or collapses together when the bagframe is closed to shut the mouth of the bag. The reference character 14 indicates a base-plate upon which is secured the lockboX 15 of a locking-mechanism for locking the respective frame-members in their closed relation. Said base-plate is secured upon the upper surface of said horizontal bodyportion 2 of the outer frame-member by means of rivets 16 or any other suitable fastening devices.
The reference character 17 indicates a hasp-plate which is secured to the outer surface of said inner frame-member by means of rivets 18, or any other suitable fastening 1 means, said hasp-plate having hasp-members 1 19 which enter said lock-box 15 and are engaged by the lock-mechanism contained therein when said bag-frame is closed. Connected with the ends of said base-plate 14 are eye-portions 20 in Which are mounted framemember, adjacent to the ends thereof are bearing-members 23 in which are journaled the journal-portions 2 1 of rotatable holding-members comprising the ears 25 connected with said journal-portions, and which may be turned downwardly to embrace the closed frame-members to prevent their separation from each other at their free end portions. f course, it will be understood that I may substitute for the lock-mechanism and said holding-members above described any other type of device accomplishing their purposes. The free ends of the horizontal bodyportion 2 of said outer frame-member extend outwardly beyond the ends of said vertical flange-portion 3 of said outer frame-member,the same being turned downwardly to form an end-cl0sure 26 for said frai'ne-member, and then being further turned inwardly to form a supporting-member 27 in the form of an inwardly eXtending tongue or lug which lies parallel to and beneath said body-portion 2 of said outer frame-member. The free ends of the horizohtal body portion 4 of said inner framemember are proidded with tongues or lugs 28 which are turned downwardly and thus close the ends of said inner frame-member, and in like manner the free ends of said verticalfiange-portion 5 of said inner frame-member are provided with tongues or lugs 29 which are turned inwardly so as to extend across the downwardly turned tongues or lugs 28. The respective tongues or lugs 28 and 29 serve to close the ends of said inner frame-members and at the same time provide an engaging portion which registers over said supporting-member 27 and which engages the same so that the latter may render support to the ends of said inner framemember when the same is associated in its closed relation with said outer framemember.
it will be readily understood that when the inner fra1ne-niember is telescoped laterally within the outer frame-member in closed relation therewith, that the supporting members 27 of said outer frame-member will engage and support the closed ends of said inner frame-member and thereby prevent the latter from sagging away from its proper association with said outer framemember or bending or becoming otherwise misshapen, and by this means the weight of the bag and its contents, which is connected withsaid bag-frame thus constructed, is uniformly and strongly supported from both members of the bag-frame when said mem bers are closed, thus providing all the strength and dui'rability of a hinged bagframe without the necessity of using such hinged connection of the bag-frame members. It will be apparent therefore that present invention provides a very cheap but none-the-less eilicient and durable bagframe, more particularly adapted for use in the cheaper grades of hand-bags, satchels and the like.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various parts of my novel bag-frame without departing from the scope of my present invention as set forth in the foregoing description, and as defined in the clauses of the claims,'which are appended to the said specification. Hence I do not limit my present invention to the eXactarrangeinents and combinations of the various parts as described in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim l. A bag-frame comprising an outer frame-member and an inner frame-member, the latter being adapted to telescope laterally into the former when said frame-members are closed together, tongues connected with the ends of said outer frame-member the same being bent downwardly and inwardly to provide supporting members adapted to engage and support the ends of said inner frame-members when said framemembersare closed together.
2. A bag-frame comprising an outer frame-member and an inner frame-memher, the latter being adapted, to telescope laterally into the former when said framemembers are closed together, tongues connected with the ends of'said outer-framemember the same being bent downwardly and inwardly to provide supporting-members, and means connected with the ends of said inner frame-member adapted to rest in supported engagement with said supporting-members when said frame-members are closed together.
3. A bag-frame comprising an outer frame-member and an innerframe-member, the latter being adapted to telescope laterally into the former when said frame-members are closed together, tongues connected with the ends of said outer frame-member the same being bent downwardly and inwardly to provide supporting members adapted to engage and supportthe ends of said inner frame-member when said framemembers are closed together, and means for maintaining said frame-members in their closed relation.
4. In a bag-frame an outer frame-member comprising a longitudinally extending horizontal body-portion and a vertical flangeportion extending downwardly from the outer edge of said body-portion, an inner frame-member comprising a longitudinally extending horizontal body-portion and a vertical flange-portion extending downwardly from the outer edge of said body portion, tongues connected with the ends of said body-portion of said outer frame-member the same being bent downwardly and inwardly to provide supporting-members lying parallel to and beneath said body-portion, and tongues connected with the ends of said body- 1 portion of said inner frame-member, the
same being bent downwardly to form an engaging portion adapted to rest in supported engagement with said supporting-members when said frame-members are closed together.
5. In a bag-frame an outer frame-member comprising a longitudinally extending horizontal body-portion and a vertical flangeportion extending downwardly from the outer edge of said body-portion, an inner frame-member comprising a longitudinally extending horizontal body-portion and a vertical flange-portion extending downwardly from the outer edge of said body-portion, tongues connected with the ends of said body-portion of said outer frame-member,
the same being bent downwardly and inwardly to provide supporting-members lying parallel to and beneath said body-portion,
tongues connected with the ends of said body-portion of said inner frame-member, the same being bent downwardly to form an engaging portion adapted to rest in supported! engagement with said supportingmembers when said frame -members are closed together, and means for maintaining said frame-members in their closed relation.
6. In a bag-frame an outer frame-member comprising a longitudinally extending horizontal body-portion and a vertical flange-o portion extending downwardly from the outer edge of said body-portion, an inner frame-member comprlsing a longitudinally extending horizontal body-portion and a vertical flange-portion extending downwardly from the outer edgeof said bodyportion, tongues connected with the ends of said body-portion of said outer frame-member, the same being bent downwardly and inwardly to provide supporting-members lying parallel to and beneath said body-portion, and tongues connected with the ends of said flange-portion of said inner framemember, the same being bent rearwardly across each end of said inner frame-member to form engaging portions adapted to rest in supported engagement with said supportingmembers when said frame-members are closed together.
