Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. MOORE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and Improved Pocket-Book, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to pocketbooks and the like, such as satchels, or other carriers of like description, the object of my invention being to provide a suitable device of this character made entirely, or in large part, of metal so as to obviate the use of leather, canvas, cloth or similar material in their manufacture and thus render the same practically indestructible. At the same time a neater, smarter and more attractive appear ance is secured by reason of the fact that the metal maintains its shape permanently and does not sag or bulge as do the more pliable materials commonly employed. Furthermore the metallic surfaces offer appropriate space for ornamentation by etching, chasing, engraving, stamping, inlaying, etc., whereby the beauty of the article may be enhanced in a manner impossible with leather, canvas, etc.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of half of a pocketbook in which my invention is embodied in one form; Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof closed; Fig. 3 is an end elevation partially in section with the sides expanded; Fig. 4 is a perspective of the pocketbook opened; and Figs. 5 and 6 are perspectives of details.

In the form illustrated, my device comprises main frame plates angled to form the ends, top and

10, 11 and 12, respectively. The lugs 13 are formed at the opposite ends of the bottom 12 and perforated to receive the pivoting rivets 14. One of the main frame plates carries the chain rings 15 to which the chain 16 is secured. Latching tongues 17 are mounted on the opposite tops 11 in the usual fashion. Inner frame bars 18 spaced slightly from the ends 10 and riveted to top and bottom form chambers 19. A wing 23 oifset from one of the inner frame bars 18 at each end of the purse enters the chamber 19 formed between the opposite bar 18 and the end frame 10, and slightly overlaps the opposite bar 18 when the purse is partially opened. Hinged to the inner frame bars 18, on each side of the pocketbook, by pivots 21, are two sets of nested U-shaped bars 20. The offset edges 24 on the bottoms of these bars insure their inter-engagement with lost motion. The side closures A and B of the pocketbook are carried by or formed integral with the innermost of the U-shaped bars 20. The latter thus form expansible side pockets which accommodate themselves to the contents of the purse. Separating diaphragms 22 may be pivoted to the side frames if desired, in order to maintain the contents of the two pockets isolated.

While sheet metal is preferably employed in the manufacture of the article described, it is not essential that the latter be constructed therefrom. Obviously also the details of construction shown and described may be variously modified without departing from my invention, and I do not limit myself to the precise structure described.

I claim as my invention:

As a new article of manufacture, a purse or the like, comprising metallic frame members pivoted at their adjacent bottom edges and carrying means for latching together their free edges, in combination with a series of nested U-shaped metallic bars pivoted at their open ends to the opposite ends of one of said frame members near its opening edge, said U-bars engaging each other with lost motion so as to form an expansible pocket, in combination with a side closure carried by the innermost of said nested bars and forming a wall of said pocket, substantially as described.
