Description

April 27, 1937. J. A. HERZOG TRAVEL I NG BAG Filed May 29, 1956l Patnted Apr. 27, 1937 UNITED STATES TRAVELING BAG Joseph A. Herzog, Newark, N. J.
Application May 29,
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in traveling bags.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved construction for a traveling bag which can be opened out perfectly flat for easy packing, which can be easily carried, and which is compact and can be easily stowed in a crowded plane or car.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved construction for a traveling bag which is neat in appearance, rugged and durable in construction, and relatively cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear,
For the purpose of illustrating my invention an embodiment thereof is shown in the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing my improved traveling bag opened out flat;
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view showing the bag closed;
Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged, fragmentary views taken from Fig. 1, showing the disposition and manner of operation of the means for hinging the two parts of the bag together; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view, the section being taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 2.
With reference to the drawing, the reference numerals IU and I2 designate the two complementary parts of the bag comprising, respectively, the bottoms I4 and I6 and the walls I8 and 20.
Means 22 in the form of a ilat, cloth-covered board is disposed between the adjacent edges of the two bottoms and connects the parts I0 and I2 for pivotal movement with respect to each other to close the bag as shown in Fig. 2, or to open the bag as shown in Fig. 1.
Two similar hinges 24 and 26 are disposed respectively at opposite sides of the bag and also pivotally connect the parts I0 and I2.
The hinge 24 comprises an intermediate V-shaped section 28 and two end sections 30 and 32 hinged to the section 28. The end sections are hinged respectively at 34 and 36 to the adjacent corners of the walls I8 and 20. The intermediate section 28 is hinged at 38 to the center board or piece 22.
It will be seen that on account of the construction just described, the bag can be opened out perfectly flat, as shown in Fig. 1, at which time the hinge sections are in the position as shown 1936, Serial No. 82,447
more clearly in Fig. 3. As the bag is closed, the intermediate hinge section 28 of each hinge pivots inwardly toward the center of the bag as illustrated in Fig. 4, and when the bag is closed this section is in a position hat against the board 22. Also, if the bag is closed, the end sections 30 and 32 of each hinge pivot with respect to the associated intermediate section, and when the bag is fully closed take positions ilat against the latter, as shown in Fig. 5.
rl"he construction and manner of operation of the hinge 26 are the same as that of the hinge 24.
It is proposed to cover the hinge sections with leather as illustrated, and to sew in pieces 40 and 42 of leather between the hinge and the adjacent edges of the parts of the bag. Metal plates 44 are secured to the inner corners of the part I2 and take the position as shown in Fig, 2 when the bag is closed.
A handle 46 is secured to the board 22, and the parts I0 and I2 are provided with a lock 4B of conventional construction.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided an improved construction for a traveling bag which is compact, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and which provides for a strong reenforcement at the point where the two parts of the bag overlap when it is closed.
It will be understood that various changes, such as in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the claim.
I claim as my invention:
A bag of the character described comprising two complementary parts each comprising a bottom and side Walls, means including a at board disposed between adjacent edges of the two bottoms and connecting said parts for pivotal movement with respect to each other to close and open the bag, and means'extending across each end of the ilat board for connecting adjacent side walls of the complementary parts; each of said connecting means comprising a rigid V-shaped section pivotally connected to said board and rigid V-shaped sections each hinged at one end thereof to a leg of said first-named section, the legs of the V-shaped sections being reversed with respect to the legs of the first-named V-shaped section, the other ends of said second-named V-shaped sections being hinged respectively to the adjacent corners of said side walls.
