This invention relates to gussets for hand ba s and closely analogous articles.

ome of the objects of the invent-ion are: to provide gussets for a hand bag, each gusset having means which combines with a portion of the usual closing flap of the bag when the latter is closed to prevent small articles from falling out of the pocket of the hand bag; to provide the gussets of a hand bag with means which also maintains the side sections of the hand bag conformed to a determinate shape so that the ends of the hand bag will be neat in appearance; and to provide the gussets of a hand bag with means which prevents the side sections of the hand bag from collapsing toward each other be yond a certain point at each end of the hand bag to prevent crushing of articles between the folds of the gussets.

The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of a hand bag embodying the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a side view of the hand bag.

Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the hand bag opened.

Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.

It is to be understood that the invention hereinafter described may be applied to a hand bag or other closely analogous articles. In the present instance the invention is shown as applied to a hand bag which consists of side sections 10 and 11 which may be produced from a single piece of material or from separate pieces of material, and said side sections 10 and 11 are formed on a bight- 12; a closing flap 13 on the side section 11, the said flap adapted to be brought over and latched in engagement with the side section 10 by virtue of any suitable fastening or latching means; and gussets 14 at each end of the hand bag which are respectively attached to the related lateral edges of the side sections 10 and 11, the said gussets 14 combining with the side sections 10 and 11 to form a pocket 15.

Each of the gussets 14 consists of an outer ply of material 16 and an inner ply or lining l7. Arranged centrally of the gusset between the outer ply 16 and lining 17 is a flat substantially stiff member 18 of V-shape. The said member may be made of any preferred material such as leather or fiber. Portions of the outer ply 16 and lining 17 are pasted to the member 18. The opposite side edges of the member 18 provide fold lines indicated at 19, there also being fold lines or creases 20 respectively at opposite sides of the mem ber 18, which provides

21 and 22 at each side of the member 18, the latter folds being attached respectively as at 23 to the related lateral edges of the side sections 10 and 11. The member 18 is so incorporated in the gusset that its pointed end will occur at the bight 12, and will have the upper end 24 extended beyond the upper edge of the gusset 14 as shown most clearly in Fig. 3. The said end 24 is rounded and is provided with a suitable binding 25 which strengthens the said end.

hen the closing flap13 is brought to a closed position latched to the side section 10, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the ends 24 respectively of the gussets 14 will combine with portions of the flap 13 to completely close the opposite ends of the hand bag and thereby prevent small articles from falling out of the pocket 15 of the hand bag. It will also be evident that the members 18 serve to keep the lateral edges of the side sections 10 and 11 in a conforming relationship with respect thereto, which will present shapely ends for the hand bag of neat appearance. It will also be evident that the members 18 will prevent the lateral edges of the side sections 10 and 11 from being brought together beyond certain limits thereby preventing articles arranged in the pocket from being crushed by the

21 and 22 of the gussets.

It is to be understood that the members 18 may be applied to the gussets 14 in other ways than that described hereinbefore. For instance each member may be applied directly to the inside or outside of the central portion of the gusset, as distinguished from its arrangement between the outer ply 16 and the gin lining 17.

I claim:

1. A bag of the class described having the combination of side sections, and gussets joining the opposite ends of said side sections to define a pocket, said gussets allowing said side sections to be moved toward and away from each other, each gusset having a non-foldable substantially V-shaped member positioned centrally thereof, and which extends approximately to the bottom juncture of said side sections, each gusset being foldable along lines coincidental with the side edges of its V-shaped member, and both V-shaped members being cooperative with the opposite ends of said side sections to limit the movement of the latter toward each other.

2. A bag of the class described having the combination of side sections, and gussets joining the opposite ends of said side sections to define a pocket, said gussets allowing said side sections to be moved toward and away from each other, each gusset consisting of an outer ply of foldable material and an inner lining and a non-foldable substantially V-shaped member arranged centrally between and secured to said outer ply and lining, each gusset being foldable along lines coincidental with the side edges of its V-shaped member, and both V-shaped members being cooperative with the opposite ends of said side sections to limit the movement of the latter toward each other.

3. A bag of the class described having the combination of side sections, a closing flap connected with one of the side sections and adapted to be latched to the other side section, and gussets joining the opposite ends of said side sections to define a pocket, said gussets allowing said side sections to be moved toward and away from each other, each gusset having a stiff fiat substantially V-shaped member positioned centrally thereof, and which extends approximately to the bottom juncture of said side sections, each gusset be ing foldable along lines coincidental with the side edges of: its V-shaped member, and both V-shaped members being cooperative with the opposite ends of said side sections to limit the movement of the latter toward each other, said V-shaped members each having an upper rounded end, the rounded ends being cooperative with said flap when the latter is latched, to prevent articles from falling out of said pocket.
