GARMENT CONTAINER AND CARRIER.
Application filed March 28, 1927. Serial No. 178,959.
'wra in containin and carr in arments dresses and the like, when the latter have been pressed and ironed and for protecting the garments not only against creasing and rufiling, but also against soiling while the sameare being carried.
With the above ends in view, my invention consists of a container which ma be formed of a simple, single sheet or b ank suitably punched out of any desired or suitable sheet material such as leather, card board, fibrous textile materials, water-proof or otherwise, or the like, which blank may be then folded in such a manner as not only to provide juxtaposed or closing walls, but also folded in such a manner as to provide projecting handles for supporting the container and also for forming a suitable hanger within the container for supporting the garment therein.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown, in the accompanying drawings, forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since they will give, in practice, satisfactor and reliable results, although it is to be un erstood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the. precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference numerals indicate like parts,
Fig. 1 represents a plan view of the container blank, embodying my invention, of which a completed container or carrier is formed, by a series of folding operations.
Figure 2 represents a perspective View of a folded container shown in the open position.
Figure 3 represents a front elevation of a container embodying my invention, shown in the closed condition.
Figure 4 represents a section on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 represents a top plan view of container blank of a modified construction embodying my invention.
Fig. 6 represents a plan view of a modi- {led container blank embodying my inven- Figure 7 represents a front elevation of the container of the modified construction, shown in the completely assembled and closed condition.
Figure 8 represents a section on line 8-8 of Figure 7.
The novel folding garment container and carrier of my invention is formed of a sin le integral blank of a suitable sheet material, as card board, leather or the like, the body portion 1 of which is generally elongated and of a rectangular shape and comprises the substantially equal halves 2 and 3 which form the two side panels or Walls of the finished container, when the blank is folded along the dotted lines 4 and 5, thereby leaving a narrow spacing member or portion 6 between the two side panels 2 and 3, so as to connect said side panels 2 and 3 in spaced relation to each other at. the bottom of the completed container or carrier.
The body portion 1 of the blank, also includes side flaps 7 and 8, coextensive with the panels 2 and 3 thereof, which are adapted to be folded inwardly along the dotted lines 9 and 10, in a manner indicated in Figure 2. One of the side panels 2 is provided with an integrally formed handle member 11, and one or more fastener tabs 12, 13 and 14, while the other side panel 3 is provided with a similar handle member 15'and a hanger member 16, which is adapted to fold inwardly. over the panel 3, along the dotted line 17, into a position indicated in Figure 2.
The side panel 3 is also provided with a v series of slots 18,19 and 20, corresponding to the fastening tabs 12, 13 and 14 respectively, into which the latter are adapted to be inserted when the container or carrier is in the closed position indicated in Figures 3 and 4; said slots being of such shape and so positioned as to interlock with the corresponding terminal locking tongues or members 21 of said tabs 12, 13, and 14. In folding the blank 1 to form the completed container or garment carrier, the locking tabs 12, 13 and 14 are folded along the dotted line 22, while the hanger member 16 is folded along the dotted line 17. The folding lines 4, 5, 9, 10, 17 and 22, may be suitably creased so as to facilitate the folding and the formation of the finished container.
In applying the novel garment container or carrier of my invention, the hanger member 16 is first folded over upon the side panel 3 along the crease17 andthe garment23 (Figs. 2 and 4) is then positioned upon the horizontal portion 24 of said hanger 16 in a manner shown particularly in Fi ure 2, and thereafter the side flaps or mem ers 7 and 8 are folded inwardly along the creases or scorings 9 and 10, over the garment 23, also as indicated in Figure 2, and thereafter the two side panels 2 and 3 are folded towards each other along the creases 4 and 5, thereby completely enclosing the garment 23 between the side panels 2 and 3 and the side flaps or members 7 and 8. The tabs 12,13 and 14 are then folded over along the lines 22 over the sidepanel 3 and inserted into the corresponding slots 18, 19 and 20 respectively in said side panel 3.
By this means the container is fastened in the closed position. The closing and securing of the container in the closed position brings the two handle members 11 and 15 in juxtaposition to each other in a manner shown particularly in Figure 4, thereby affording a substantial and convenient means of carrying the garment container of my invention.
In Figures 5 to 8 inclusive, I have illustrated a modified embodiment of my invention. This modified construction also includes a blank 1 comprising the side panels I 2 and 3 folded along the creases 4 and 5, and
including also the side flaps 7 and 8, adapted to be folded along the creases 9 and 10. In
this modification however, the side panel 3, is provided with a hanger 25 which includes the horizontal supporting member 26, the two oppositely inclined members 27 and the uppermost portions 28 of whichare formed integrally with the side panel 3. By this construction in a hanger 11, not only are means provided for carrying garments which are folded over the horizontal supporting bar 26, but means are also provided for conveniently supporting and carrying such garments as a blouse, shirt, coat or the like, by hanging the same on the two oppositely inclined portions 27. The hanger 25 is similarly folded inwardly along the creases 29. Within the hanger 25 a handle member 30 is formed of a similar construction to that shown in Fi ures 1 to 4 inclusive, and also formed integral y with the side panel 3.
The opposed side panel 2 is in turn provided with a terminal handle member 31 similar to the handle member 30 and a series of tabs 32, 33 and 34 are provided with suitable snap fasteners 35. The fastening tabs 32, 33 and 34 are adapted to be folded inwardly along the creases 36. The opposed side panel-3 is provided with corresponding snap fastener members 37 which are adapted to receive the fastening members 35, when the tabs 32, 33 and 34 are folded over onto the panel 3 in a manner shown particularly in Figures 7 and 8, so as firmly to maintain the container in the closed condition.
By the provision ofthe handle members 11 and 15 and 30 and 31 (see Figs. 1 and 5) I not only greatly'reinforce the construction and render my novel container capable of supporting a greater weight, but I also guard against the accidental opening or unfolding of the container by the accidental disengagement of the locking tabs 13 and 35. Thus, if while the container is in use, one or both of thesets of locking tabs 13 and 35 should work loose, the container is prevented from opening and spilling its contents, due to the fact that both the handles 11 and 15 and 30 and 31 are held contiguous in the hand, and thus the blanks or body portions 2 and 3 integral with said handles are maintained securely folded against each other.
In applying the novel garment container or carrier of this modified construction, the hanger 25 is first folded along the crease 29 and thereafter the blouse or other garment is placedmpon the hanger in a manner shown in Figure 6, either by hanging the same upon the two opposed inclined members 27 thereof or by hanging the same upon the horizontal supporting bar 26 thereof. Thereafter the side flaps 7 and 8 are folded over the garment and then the two side panels 2 and 3 are folded and drawn towards each other in juxtaposition to each other by folding the same along the creases 4 and 5. The completed container is then secured in the closed condition by the application of the tabs 32, 33 and 34 by'folding the same over onto the panel 3 and uniting the snap fasteners 35 and 37.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.
