Description

M. HIRSCH FOLDABLE BOX Fil$d March 15, 1924 Patented May 15, 19 28.
v UNITED. STATES MORRIS HIRSCH, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
I'OLDABLE BOX.
Application filed March 15, 1824. Serial No. 699,456.
Another object is to provide a cheap and simple form of dispensing carton, which can be quickly shaped up for use, and has means whereby the closure may be securely locked in position with a carrying means ex- IB tending upwardly fromthe body of the box over the closure and locking means.
Another object is to provide certain improvements in the form, construction and arran ement of the parts whereby the above I name and other objects may be effectively carried out.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in .the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents-a perspective view of my improved box.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical section taken in the plane of the line II--II of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 represents a plan'view of the blank, on a smaller scale, from which the box is formed.
The material from which the box is to' be made may be any suitable sheet material, but I preferably em loy cardboard of a quality and character w ich is familiar to those in the art. This sheet material may be laid out flat and stamped or cut in any well known or approve manner. The creasing or scoring along the lines where the folding is to take place in the formation of the box,
is accomplished at the same time the blank is stamped or cut, in a well known manner.
The form of blank which embodies the subject matter of this invention is clearly shown in Fig. 3 and comprises various panels, flaps, ears and slits, all of which-combine and cooperate in the construction of the formed box.
The blank has main bod panels denoted by 1 and 2, and smaller b0 y panels denoted by 3 and 4. There is a set of flaps at the lower end of the body panels, which-set consists of large fla s 5 and 6, and smaller flaps 7 and 8. he'body panels are also provided at the upper end with large flaps denoted by 9, 10 and smaller flaps 11 and 12. The panel 3 has a narrow strip 13 extending substantially throughout the length of its free edge and is intended to be provided with an adhesive so that it may be secured to the panel 2 and hold the main body panels of the box in folded shape.
The blank is provided with crease lines or scores at the junction of the main body panels 1, 2, 3, 4 and strip 13, and at the upper and lower junctions of the main body panels with the lower flaps 5, 6, 7 and 8 and the upper flaps 9, 10, 11 and 12. These lines of crease are indicated in the drawing by dotted lines.
The lower flaps 5, 6, 7 and 8 are severed from each other by slits or cuts shown in Fig. 3 by double lines. The upper flaps 9, 10, 11 and 12 are similarly severed by slits also shown in Fig. 3 by double lines.
The blank may be folded upon the creases between the panels 1, 3 and 2, 4 so that the -panel 2 will be brought into position to overlap the strip 13. The panel 2 and strip 13 are held together by glue orother suitable adhesive. The panels may now be turned laterally upon each other so as to form an open ended rectangular tube. At this juncture, the flaps 7 and "8 may be folded toward each other,-the flap 5 folded upon the flaps 7 and8and the flap 6 folded upon the flap 5. In order to secure the flaps in closed position and against unintentional displacement, the flap 6 is formed with oppositely disposed ears 14, 15 which are arranged to enter angularly disposed slits 16, 17, thereby ensuring the retention of the flaps against movement. These flaps when locked in position form the bottom of the box. The box is closed by folding the flaps 11 and 12 downwardly and toward each other, and the flaps 9 and 10 folded upon the flaps 11 and 12. I
A crease 18 is formed at each end of a U-shaped slit 19 in the flap 9,, so that as the In order that the flaps forming the cover and handle of the box .may be locked into position, I provide the fla 10 with a notched ear 24, which is arrange to enter an arouate slit 25, so that the notch 26 in' the ear 24 will hook in the slit and lock the flaps closed on the box.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that I not only provide a blank which is fitted to form a strong serviceable box, but the blank is so arranged and divided as to constitute when folded, the body, the bottom, the top, and handles bv which the box may be carried. Furthermore, the outer surfaces of the box may be printed with appropriate subject'niatter at one operation and without reversing the blank.
It will be understood that various changes may be resorted to in the form, arrangement and material without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; and hence,
, I do not intend to be limited to the specific details herein shown and described, except as they may be included in the claims. What I claim is 1. A foldable rectangular box comprising four body panels, four lower flaps, a pair of which are cut to form coacting locking means for securing the flapsin closed osition, and four upper flaps, a pair of w ich are cut to form coactin locking means for securing the flaps in c osed position, said last named pair of flaps being also cut and creased to permit their outer ends to "be turned upwardly at the creases in proximity to each other along a middle line at the top of the box 'to provide \coacting handles by which the box may becarried.
2. A foldable rectangular box comprisin four body panels and a sealing strip to hol the panels in shape, four lower flaps, a pair of which are cut to form coacting lockin means for securing the flaps in closed osltion, and four upper flaps, a pair of w ich are cut to form coacting locking means for securing the flaps in closed position, said
