LADYS HAND BAG Filed April 16, 1927 IIIIIL j jf@ O- Patented Nay 27, 13@
PATENT oFFlcE HUGO BAROL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA LADYs HAND -BAG Application led April 16,
This invention, generally stated, relates to ladies hand bags and has more especial relation to that type of hand bag calculated for the carrying of more or less bulky articles.
The leading object of the present invention ma be said to reside in the provision of a hand ag of the character stated the lower part of which is relatively wide in cross section in normal or closed position of the bag so that the upper parts converge, whereby when' the bag is opened up the bag interiorly is of relatively the same cross section throughout its height.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a bag of this character in which the same is provided with separate compartments each compartment being lined with water proofing material whereby a person can separate wet garments, as bathing suits, from dry articles of wearing apparel.-
A still further object of the present invention is to provide for each face of the bag a pliable loop or hand grip in the form of a strap, the lower end of .each strap being fixed immediately adjacent the normal, Widest portion of said bag.
Other and further objects not at this time appearing will be hereinafter more fully described.
The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1, is a view in perspective of a hand bag embodying the invention.
Fig. 2, is a View in cross section of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a view in side elevation of a slightly different form of the bag in closed position.
Fig. 4, is an end view of Fig. 3.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention Thave shown in the accompanying drawings two forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the vsame have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of 1927. serial No'. 184,254.
which m invention consists can be variously arrange and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Referring now to the drawings, and with more especial relation to Figs. 1 and 2, the reference numeral 1 designates one face of the hand bag and the reference numeral 2 designates the opposite face of the bag. These faces 1 and 2 are connected by end pieces 3 each having a creased portion 4. In the normal or closed position of the bag the bottom portion of the bag is of relatively wide cross section, whereas the upper part of the bag converges by reason of the creases 4, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Thus, the bottom portion of the bag in closed'or normal position is of much more spacious dimensions than is the top of the bag. p
As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the bag has a partition 5 provided with a flap 6. In practice this flap 6 is adapted to be folded over the face 1 of the bag and the flap is secured to place by a conventional fastening l medium, as for instance snap fastener parts 7. The rear of the bag, or in other Words, the face 2 is provided with a flap 8 which in closed position of the bag completely conceals the iap 6 and is secured as by snap fastener parts 9. This arrangement of parts is very clearly shown in Fig. 2. Both the face 1 and the face 2 of the bag are provided with pliable straps or loops, designated l0 and 11 respectively.- These straps are each fixed as by means of stitches 11 immediately adjacent the bottom portion of the bag and extend well above the top of the bag in closed position to form convenient means for carrying the bag upon the arm. The compartments 12 are each lined with water proofing material 13, see Fig. 2, as well as the overlying iiaps 6 and 8. Thus, a person may within one compartment carry dry wearing apparel and in the other compartment carry wet wearing apparel, as for instance a bathing suit, so that the wet clothing and the dry clothing do not contact one with the other.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4, the shape of the bag is the same and the arrangement of straps 10 and 11 is the same, as well as the creases 4. However, instead of having two flaps but a single flap 14 is 'em loyed.
In order to stiifen the bottom o the bag, and also in order to maintain the bottom of the bag in its fixed, widest extent at all times, and also to provide strength and stability, I employ a piece of cardboard or the like, designated in Fig. 2 by reference numeral 15.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiments thereof which have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A bag of the character described, comprising side and bottom portions formed from a single piece of material, a rigid member applied to the bottom to provide a relatively wide cross sectional area therefor at all times, end pieces of a width equivalent to the bottom portion stitched at the side edges thereof to the edges of said side portions and creased inwardly from the top thereof to produce upwardly converging side portions when the bag is closed and permit approximately the same cross sectional area throughout the height when the bag is open, a central partition wall stitched to the inner face of one Aside portion by the same means stitching the ends thereto, a relatively short flap formed integral with the upper end of said partition and overlapping the outer face of the last mentioned side portion, means to removably secure said fia to the outer face of said lastmentioned si e portion, a relatively large flap formed integral with the upper portion of the o posite side portion adapted to overlap the rst mentioned flap and the rst mentioned side portion to enclose the upper portion of the bag, additional means to removably secure the second mentioned flap to the outer face of the first mentioned side portion below the aforesaid securing means and relatively long hand loops stitched at their ends for a reasonable distance of their length to the outer faces of the side portions of the bag well below the upper edges thereof, the stitching of the loops terminating in a plane well below the securing means for the large flap and said loops being adapted to project well above the bag top, as and for the purposes described.
