Description

April 17,1928.
K w. N. HUNTER COMBINED HAND BAG AND GRIP Filed March 1 1922Y Patented Apr. 17, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N. HUNTER, F BLANCHESTER, OHIO.
COMBINED HAND BAG- ANI) GRIP.
My invention relates to traveling bags and grips which are adapted to be folded so as to provide a ladys hand bag when it is desired to use the construction for that pur-f In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the complete traveling bag? Figure 2 is a similar view of the bag folded for a hand bag. J Figure 3 is a central vertical section of' the bag as shown in Figure 1.
b Figure 4 is a similar section of the folded The bag is constructedof leather, cloth,
canvas,'orl other suitable material, with a Mrectangularbottom 1, reinforced by a sheet of stiff cardboard or other stiffmaterial4 2,
' to forma flat substantial bottom, with in- A tegral sides 3, 3, extended to form bellows fold ends along the median line `5 of which the sidesV are secured together, a triangular fold 6 being provided at the bottom.
The bottom is also provided with the bottom supports 4,' one near each of the four corners and, Whenprefe'rred, at the middle,
so that the construction for the lower portion is exactly like the ordinary travelers rip. The sides apd ends, however, are 'extended upwardly considgrably more than in 40 the ordinary grip Wh re it. is desired to .I provide a l'adys hand bag of the ordinary shape, although it will. of. course, be under,-
stood that dimensions of the bag can be varied Within Wide limits to satisfy the requirements.
-A .t the top, theupper edges are sloped olf orV beveled to reduce the dimensions of the opening vat the top and to enhance the appearance. Secured at br n ear the top edge 7 of the bag on one side is a rectangular pocket 8 the width of thebag. This pocket Application led March 1, 1922. Serial No. 540,320.
8 is free except at the top, and on the inner side of the pocket near the lower edge, fastening members 10, 10, are provided to engage with corresponding fastening members 12, 12, which are secured in proper position on the opposite side of thebag near the bottom. These fasteners arepreferably snap glove fasteners.
y`When it is desired to convert the traveling bag into a ladys hand bag, the stiff bottom is folded upwardly along the side to which the pocket is attached and then folded again vto bring the upper end of the fold under the pocket and the fasteners into engagement where they are locked together. and the original bag is converted into the hand bag.
The pocket member is provided with a flap locked shut by a fastener 13. The upper edge of the bag is reinforced with a double thickness of material or may be bound With a metal strip if desired. The handles 14, 14,
are secured at the upper edge, and a flap or `tongue 15 to be secured by a fastener 16 is also provided to close the bag. If desired, of course, a lock can be employed to engage and lock together the sides of the bag at the mouth. to be opened with akey. In order to retain the bag in a truly rectangular form and give it an appearance when fully open of an elongated hand Satchel, I form a line of stitches 17 along each longitudinal fold. In this Way I form a permanent crease along' this line of fold. w'hich in addition materially assists in the repeated folding up of the bag.
Having thus described my invention, what I cl'aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y A hand bag of the character specified, comprising a body portion of flexible material, a flat, stili' rectangular bottom therefor, said bottom foldable against the outer surface of the body portion. bringing a. fold of the opposite side ofthe body outermost, and said `bottom having substantially half the Width of the length of the bag, whereby the stitl bottom acts as a guide in folding to reduce the length ot' the bag when folded to substantially half-the length of the bag when extended, and means for securing the bottom in folded position.
