STAY-HINGE FOR BAG-FRAMES.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Hooo TUEGKMANTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Hinges for Bag-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The present invention relates, generally, to improvements in bag-frames; and this invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of bag-frame and hinge-construction therefor, the hinge-memhers forming integral portions of the bag frame sections, the ends of the frame-sections being peculiarly bent and pivotally connected, and the bent ends of the framesections forming stay-members which provide catch-portions for the engagement therewith of a spring-plate to retain the frame-sections in their open relation, but the said spring-plate being in separable sliding engagement withone of said catchportions to permit of the closing of the hinged frame-sections.

The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed bagframe, the hingemembers of which form integral parts of the respective frame-seetions thereof, and the hinge-members of which are of such construction that an eflicient stay-hinge is provided, all of the parts being arranged in a manner so as to do away with the additional cost of construction in making independent hinges, and, furthermore, thereby avoiding the additional cost and labor in attaching such independent hinges to the bag-frame sections.

The invention has for its further object to provide a novel combined bag-frame and stay-hinge therefor for readlly brlnging the frame-sections into their opened relations and positively retaining them in their opened relations, but the parts of the hingeconstruetion being arranged in such a man ner, so that the opened bag-frame sections can be easily and quickly closed without any further operation on the part of the operator.

Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly cnumcratcd will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the said invention.

With the various objects of the present invention in view, the invention consists, primarily, in the novel combined bag-fran1c and hinge-connection hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the details of the construction of the parts of the bag-frame and its ,lllllgtb-(ZOIIDOClLl()ll more fully described in detailin the followin the clauses of the claim whlch are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of a bag-frame and its hinge-connections made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the frame-sections being shown in their opened relation. Fig.2 is a fragmentary side-elevation of one of the hinged portions of the bag-frame-sections, said view being made on an enlarged scale, and the parts being represented in their stayed open relation; and Figs. 3 and 4- are side elevations of the opposite sides of the hingle-connection, certain parts of the frame being omitted from said views, and the hinged portions represented in said Figs. 3 and lbeing shown in their closed or folded positions with relation to each other. Fig. 5 is a transverse section, taken on line 5-5 in said Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said d 'awings, the reference-character 1 indicates one style of complete bag-frame, the same in this case comprising two frame-sections which are pivotally connected by means of the hingeconnections made according to and embodying the principles of the present invcntion.

As shown in the several figures of the drawings, the end-portions of the side-sections 2 are bent at right angles, as at 7, so as to lie in vertical planes at right angles to the horizontal plane of the upper face of said side-section 2. In like manner, the endportions of the side-sections 3 are also bent at right angles, as at 8, so as to lie in vertical planes at right angles to .the horizontal plane of the upper face of said side-section 3. Thus, the frame-sections of the bagframe are provided at their respective endportions with pivot-ears or

7 and 8, which are integrally connected with the respective side-sections of the bagframe, and extend longitudinally from the said end-portions of the side sections, substantially in the manner shown. The separating plate 12, as will be seen from Fig. 3 of the drawings, may also be provided with a concave marginal edge-portion, as 19, which is in alinement with and conforms to the marginal depression 1.6 of the ear 8, although it will be understood, that for the purposes of the present invention, this concave marginal edge-portion 19 of the separating plate is not necessary, and the said plate may be of any other suitable marginal configuration.

Suitably secured upon the under surface of the side-section 3 of the bag-frame, by means of rivets 20, or other suitable fastening means, is a spring-plate 21, having its forward end-portion 22 made with a curved engaging member, as 23, of the general conformation shown, and correspondingnsubstantially to the shape of the concave depression 16 of the ear orlug 8, and with which the said member 23, when the frame-sections of the bag-frame, whether in their opened or closed relations, is in registration, substan tially in the manner indicated in the several figures of the drawings. The said springplate 21 is of such width, so that, when the bag-frame sections are brought into their opened relation, the convex surface of the engaging member 23 will ride upon a portion of the convex marginal edge 13 of the ear or lug 7, and over the nosing 17 of said lug or ear 7, the spring-action of the said plate 21 suddenly forcing the said engaging member 23 with a perceptible snap into its separable holding or retaining engagement with the retaining depression 15 of the pivot-ear or lug 7, as will be readily understood from an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings, the parts thus acting in the manner of a hinge-stay for positively holding 'open the frame-sections and the mouth of the bag-body secured to the said frame-sections.

From the foregoing description of the 1 present invention, it will be clearly evident, 3 that a neat and simply constructed bag- 1' frame has been produced, the hinged connec- -l tions of which form integral parts of the rev5 spective frame-sections so that a strong and eificient stay-hinge for bag-frames is also provided; and, furthermore, a better and 'much more neatly finished hingeconnection is the result, there being no unsightly ob- Estructions or raised parts which prevent a neat finish of the usual leather coverings employed with bag-frames, and especially with the styles of frames known as English or 1 sewed-111 frames.

Of course, I am aware that some changes amay be made in the general arrangements Qand combinations, as well as in the shapes iof the several parts without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential 3 part of the said specification. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various parts as described in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the eXact details of the construction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

1. A bag frame comprising a pair of frame sections, each frame section being provided with registering hinge members forming integral portions of the said framesections, said hinge-members being in the form of perforated ears bent at right angles from the end-portions of the frame-sections .and extending upwardly in vertical planes at right angles to the planes of the faces of said frame-sections and longitudinally of the end-members of the said frame-sections, said ears being provided in their lower marginal edge-portions with concave receiving depressions, a pivot-pin in the registering pivot-ears of said hinge-members, and a spring-plate secured to one of said framesections, said spring-plate having a curved engaging member upon one of its end-portions normally in engagement with the marginal depression of one of said pivot-ears, said engaging member being adapted to be brought into slid-able retaining engagement with the marginal depression of the other of said piv0tears.

2. A bag frame comprising a pair of frame-sections, each frame-section being provided with registeringhinge-members forming integral portions of the said framesections, said hinge-members being in the form of perforated ears bent at right angles from the end-portions of the frame-sections and extending upwardly in vertical planes at right angles to the planes of the faces of said frame-sections and longitudinally of the end-members of the said frame-sections, said ears being provided in their lower marginal edge-portions with concave receiving depressions, a pivot-pin in the registering pivot-ears of said hinge-members, a springplate secured to one of said frame-sections,

said spring-plate having a curved engaging member upon one of its end-portions normally in engagement with the marginal depression of one of said pivot-ears, said engaging member being adapted to be brought into slidable retaining engagement with the marginal depression of the other of said pivot-ears, and a perforated separating plate mounted upon said pin and between the registering pivot-ears.

3. A bag frame comprising a pair of frame-sections, each frame-section being provided with registering hinge-members forming integral portions of the said framesections, said hinge-members being in the form of perforated ears bent at right angles from the end-portions of the frame-sections and extending upwardly in vertical planes at right angles to the planes of the faces of said frame-sections and longitudinally of the end-members of the said frame-sections, said ears being provided in their lower marginal edge-portions with concave receiving depressions, a pivot-pin in the registering pivot-ears of said hinge-members, a springplate secured to one of said frame-sections, said spring-plate having a curved engaging member upon one of its end-portions normally in engagement with the marginal depression of one of said pivot-cars, said engaging member being adapted to be brought into slidable retaining engagement with the marginal depression of the other of said pivot-ears, and a perforated separating plate mounted upon said pin and between the registering pivot-ears, the said plate being provided with a concave marginal edge-portion conforming substantially to the configuration of the concave receiving depressions of the pivot ears, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
