BAG-FRA E HINGE. H
T 0 all whom it concern:
*Be it known that 1, WILLIAM citizen of the United States, residin Newark, in the county of Essex and at tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 7 in Bag-Frame Hinges and I do-hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto charactersof'reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, rto improvements in bag-frames; and, the present invention has reference, 'more particularly to an improvement in the'hinge-constructionfor bag-frames set forth in Letters- Patent No. 1,102,307, granted May 26th,
1914, to Hugo Tueckmantel, the hinge proper, however, being separate from the members of the'frame-sections, instead of forming integral parts thereof as in the said above-mentioned Letters-Patent.
' The present invention has for its principal-object to provide ajsimply-constructed' hinge forbag-frames of the general character hereinafter set, forth, in which the hinge-leaves or members are provided with reinforcing ribs, said ribs at the same time providing the means of pivotal connection of the hinge-members, with a *view', primarily, of strengthening thegeneral construction of the hinge, providing'strong and rigidly secured hinge-members which will not bend or break or pull away from the rivets at the hinge or pivot-points of the bag-frame sections, where the greatest or maximum strains are brought upon the bag frame.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel bag-frame hinge hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore in such novel arrangements and combination of parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the A. Lorz, a

claim whichareappended to, andwhich form the principles 'ofthe present invention, the,
two' frame-sections being represented in their closed relation, 7' a i F ig; 2 is a top or plan view of one of the hinges, and the end-portions of vthe two frame-sections pivotally connected by means of the hinge; and Fig; 3 is a bottom view of the devices and parts represented in said vFig. 2, said views being made on an enlarged scale.
' Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one of the hinges and the end portions of the .two
frame-sections pivotally connected by means of the hinge, showing the parts in theirv closed relatlon; Fig.5 is a similar view of the same parts, 'showing'the samein their partly opened relation; and Fig. 6, is a similar view'of thesame parts, said parts in this view, however being represented in their entirely opened relation. 2 7
7 Similar characters of reference are em ployedin the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts. v
Referring nowto the said drawings, the
reference-character 1' indicates'onestyle of complete bag-frame consisting of two frame sections which are pivotally connected by means of a pair of hinges made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention.
In the present form of bag-frame the reference- characters 2 and 3 indicate the outer and inner body-sections, with which are respectively connected by means of brackets, as 4 and 5, the side- members 6 and 7. Suitably secured to the side member 6, by means of rivets 8, or the like, is a hinge-plate 9, and similarly secured to the other side-member 7 by means of rivets 10 is a hinge-plate 11. As shown, the said hinge-plate 9 is provided with longitudinally extending marginal reinforcing ribs or projections, as 12, each rib or projection being provided with a perforated enlargement, as 13, providing a pivot-ear or lug, of convex configas 15. Similarly, the said hinge-plate 11 is also provided with longitudinally extending marginal reinforcing ribs or projections, as 16, each rib or projection being provided with a perforated enlargement, as 17, providing a pivot-ear or lug, of convex configuration. Each pivot-lug or ear 17 is also marginally concaved, as at 18, and is formed with a cam-projection or tooth-like portion,
as 19. In practice, the respective pivot-ears or lugs 13 and 17, are brought intomovable registration with each other, substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, a pivot-pin 20, upon which is a separating collar or washer, as 21, being employed for pivotally connecting the respective pivotears or lugs, so that the frame-sections can be opened or closed, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings. Suitably disposed between each side-member 6 and the hinge-plate 9, and secured in position by means of the rivets 8, is a spring-plate 22 having its forward end-portion made with a curved engaging member, as 23, which is disposed beneath the concaved portions 14 and 18 of the respective pivot-ears or lugs 13 and 17, no matter whether the frame-sections are in their closed relation, as indicated in Fig. 4, or in their opened relation, as represented in Fig. 6. Thesaid spring-plate is of such width, so that, when the frame-sections are brought into their opened relation, the convex surface of the engaging member 23 will ride upon convex surface-portions of the ears or lugs 17 and finally upon the camprojections or tooth-like portions 19 of said ears or lugs 17, as indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the spring-action of said plate 22 suddenly. forcing the said engaging member 23 with a perceptible snap into the holding or retaining engagement of the various parts, as represented in said Fig. 6, the parts thus acting in the manner of a hinge-stay for positively holding open the frame-sections and the mouth of the bag-body which is secured in the usual manner to said framesections. 1 i
From the foregoing description of the present invention it will be clearly evident that a neat and simply-constructed, as well as a rigid hinge-structure for bag frames has been produced, whereby owing to the arrangement of the reinforcing ribs, when the hinge is secured in place, the danger of the hinge-plates pulling away from the rivets, or the possibility of the hinge-structure snapping or breaking at the pivot-connection is entirely overcome. v
V I claim V In combination with the frame-sections of a bag-frame, a hinge comprising a pair of hinge-plates, means for securing the respective hinge-plates to the respective framesections, marginal reinforcing ribs connected with and extending longitudinally the entire length of each hinge-plate, said ribs having enlarged portions providing pivot-ears, the ears of one hinge-plate being in registration with the ears of the other hinge-plate, each ear having a conveXly formed marginal portionpa 'concavely formed marginal portion, and a cam-projection, a pivot-pin for pivotally connecting said ears, a spring-plate upon one of said frame-sections and beneath one of said hinge-plates, and an engaging member connected with said spring-plate, said engaging member being adapted to be brought into separable retaining engagement with the cam-projections of the other hinge-plate,'and a separating collar mounted upon said pivot-pin. V V In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of anuary, 1918.
