Description
Feb. 25,1Q36. c; H|ER|NG BAG FRAME FASTENER Filed July 25, 1934 INVENTOR TORNEY Patented Feb. 25, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BAG FRAME FASTENER Application July 25, 1934, Serial No. 736,814
2 Claims.
This invention relates to frames for ladies hand bags and more particularly to fastening devices for such hand bags.
Heretofore there has been used. on ladies hand bags a latching device generally referred to as the throw over type. This type of latch comprises a member which is hinged to one frame member and adapted to frictionally engage the other frame member to hold the two frame members together. However, such latching devices have been found objectionable, in that, when the bag is open, the latching member has a tendency to fall over the frame member to which it is hinged, and When it is desired to close the bag, the latching member in such a position prevents closing of the bag and necessitates lifting thereof to a raised position.
It is an object of this invention to provide a latch of the throw over type for hand bags which will remain in a raised position when a bag is opened. A further object is to provide a latching device of the throw over type which can be readily and conveniently attached to hand-bag frames after bag covering material has been attached to such frames.
These and other advantageous objects, which will hereinafter appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a handbag embodying 'my invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the manner in which the fastening device is attached to a handbag frame,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a portion of a handbag frame embodying details of my invention,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing my invention applied to another form of channelled frame member,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing details of a fastening device shown in Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing details of the fastening device and frame structure of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown in Fig. 2 a pair of outwardly opening channelled U- shaped frame members 5 to which bag covering material 6 is attached. Each of said frame members comprises a bottom wall 1, an inner wall 8 and an outer wall 9, the bag covering material passing over and concealing the outer wall 9.
Attached to the inner wall 8 is a plate H] which is bent outwardly at the center thereof to provide a passage II for a purpose hereinafter explained. In order to assist in mounting the plate I0 and to properly space the latter from the wall 5, the plate H1 is provided, at its lower edge, with a horizontal portion |2 which has an upstanding vertical portion l3 abutting the outer wall 9. The bag covering material is inserted into the channel and passes over the upper edge of the outer wall 9 and the upstanding portion I3, as shown in the drawing, see Fig. 2.
Heretofore, latching devices have been attached to frame members before the bag covering material is attached, but in my device, the bag covering material can be attached before the attaching of the latching device, which considerably facilitates the manufacture of handbags.
The latching device is shown to comprise a tab M which is inserted in the passage II and has projections l5 which pass through apertures in the bottom wall 1, the projections l5 being bent over the bottom wall I to securely hold the tab in position. The tab I4 is integral with a right-angularly directed ledge l6 having integral upstanding ears I1 and a right angled upwardly extending flange l8. The ledge I6 is also provided with a pair of bosses l9, spaced from the flange l8.
Inserted between the flange l8 and the lugs I9 is a flat bowed spring 20 which engages a lug 2| integral with the latching member 22, the latter comprising a curved sheet of metal having its edge adjacent the ledge 2| bent into tubular bearings 23 to accommodate a pivot pin 24, which passes through the tubular bearings 23 and through apertures in the upstanding ears It will be seen that the lug 2| at all times engages the bowed flat spring 20, and when in a raised position, the flat spring 20 prevents the latching member 22 from falling over when the bag is open.
It can be readily seen that a bag can be completely covered with bag covering material before the latching device is attached thereto, as it is only necessary to insert tab M in the passage II to attach a latching device to the frame member.
In Figs. 4, 5, and 6 is shown a modified form, in which the latching device embodying my invention is attached to a channelled frame member in which the channel opens inwardly. In this case, the latching device is soldered onto the frame member, or it may be secured thereto in any other desired or convenient manner, and obviously such soldering operation can be accomplished conveniently and readily after the bag v ng mat al has been attached to the frame member.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a simple latching device of the throw over type which can be conveniently attached to frame members after or before bag covering material has been attached to said frame members. Also it will be noted that the Jlatching device comprises few parts, and is denoted in the appendedfclaimsgi 7 7 Having: thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters capable of efiective operation at all times. 7
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as
' Patent, is:
" 1. A latching device for frame members of a? hand bag, said device comprising a ledge at tached to one ofthe frame members, said ledge Having fipwardlydirected ears and a rightangled upwardly directed flange, bosses project- I ing upwardly from said ledge and spaced from said flange, a bowed spring positioned between said bosses and flangea latching member pivotally supported by said ears, and a lug on said latching member engaging said bowed spring at all times, said latching member being adapted to frictionally engage the other frame member to hold the twc: frame members together.
2. A latching device for frame members of a hand bag, comprising a ledge attached to one of the frame members, said ledge having an up wardly directed flange, bosses projecting up= wardlffrom said ledge and spaced from said fianga abowed spring positioned between said bosses iand flange, .a latching member, means for pivotally supporting said latching member, and a lug on said latching member engaging said bowed spring at all times, said latching member being adapted to frictionally engage the other frame member to hold the two frame :membe'rs together.
