UNITED STATES ELMER E. RICE, OF EAU CLAIRE, WISCONSIN.
` HINGE.
Speeicatign of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1907.
Application iiletl January 4, 1907. Serial No. 350,780.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E; Rien, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, oi which the following is a specification, reference being had ,therein to the accompanying drawing.
lhis invention relates to improvements in detachable hinges and consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement o parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object ol' the invention is to provide a simple, strong, durable and inexpensive hinge "of this character for removably or detachably mounting screen doors, the covers or lids oi sample cases, and similar swinging devices.
Further objects and advantages of the invention, as well as the structural features by means oi which they are attained, will be made clear by an examination oi the speciIication, taken' in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, in which the same reference numerals indicate corresponding portions throughout, and in wh-ich,
Figure l is a perspective view of the improved detachable hinge, looking at its inner side; Fig. 2 is a similar viewoi the attaching plate or stationary section oi the two-part member oi the hinge, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a hinge with the attaching plate removed; Fig. 4 is a horizontal or cross section taken on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 in Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a slightly modiiied iorm oi the hinge; and Fig. 6 is a cross section through the same.
Referring more particularly to Figs. l to 4, inclusive, of the drawings, the numerals l and 2 denote the two members or leaves oi' the improved hinge, the former of which is single and the latter oi' which is double or composed of two separable or detachable sections 3, 4. The member 1 is adapted to be secured on a door or the like by screws or similariastenings inserted in countersunk openings 5 formed in it; and it is pivoted to the section 3 of the member 2, preierably by a pintle 6 passed through alining sockets 7 iormed on said members. The section or plate 4 serves as an attaching plate and may be termed the stationary section since it is secured upon the door frame or the like by screws inserted inA countersunk openings 8 iormed in said plate. In. this plate are also i'ormed one or more keeper openings 9`or the reception of projections 10 provided upon the plate or" section As here shown, the projections l() are in the form of loops stamped out from the plate 3. These loops, when inserted in the keeper openings 9 are adapted to iit over upwardly projecting tongues 1l iormed in the openings 9. These tongues 10 are formed by making the openings 9 of inverted U-shape and by recessing or cutting away the rear Iaces oi the portion oi the plate between the vertical arms or branches l2 ol' the openings 9,` into which arms or branches the ends et the loops 10 drop as the tongues or projections l0 enter said loops. In attaching the plate 3 to the plate e, the former is placed against the outer face oi'the latter, so that the loops 10 enter the large upper portions of thejopenings 9, and said plate is then dropped or moved downwardly so that the loops l0 drop over the projections or tongues Il., as shown in Fig. 1.
Instead of employing two loops and tongues, as shown in Fig. 1, I may provide but a single tongue 1 3 and a single loop lll, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6; The loop 14 is arranged centrally upon the plate 3 and the tongue 13 is tapered upwardly and arranged in the center oit a centrally-disposed opening l5 formed in the plate 4. The opening 15 is oi gradually increasing width from its bottom to its top, as shown.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that a hinge when constructed in accordance with the invention may be made at a comparatively small cost and that its two detachable sections may be quickly and easily engaged and disengaged, so that the door or otherl swinging object which it supports may be applied to and removed from its frame without the necessity of removing any screws or similar` fastenings.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters `Patent oi the United States, is:w
l. A hinge comin-ising pivotally connected members, one of said members consisting of two ilat plates, a tongue upon one of said plates, and a loop upon the other of said plates adapted toengagc said tongue.
2. A detachable hinge comprising pivotally connected members, one of said members consisting of two ilat plates, one oi' said plates being` apertured and recessed to form a tongue lying wholly Within the plane of said plate, and the other of said plates havingl-` a loop stamped outwardly from it for engagement with said tongue.
3. A detachable hinge comprising pivotally connected members, one member consisting oi. two iiat plates, one of said plates having a substantially Ushaped opening, and a tongue in said opening, the rear face of said tongue being recessed, and the `other ol said plates havingl a substantially U-shaped loop stamped out from it and adapted to enter said opening and to surround said tongue the ends of said loop being located in the ends oi said openings, and the central portionA of said loop being located in the recessed portion ol said tongue and lying within the plane of the inner face of the first-mentioned plate, snbstalr tially as shown and described.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
