Be it known that I, Anens'r GOERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking or Holding Catches; andl do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which its appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v,
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in catches; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed locking or holding catch which is especially adapted for use with portfolios, pocket-books, bags,
suit-cases, and the like. i
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed locking or holding catch of the general character hereinafter set forth, in which the various parts are reduced to a minimum, which is neat and ornamental in appearance, and is most efiective in its operation. j I
Other objects of the inventionnot at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed descriptionof the same,
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel looking or holding catch I hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations ofthe various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, allof which will be more fully described inthe following specification, and then finally embodied in the clanse's of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification g r The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawings, in which v Figure l is a front face view of a looking or holding catch showing one embodimm of the principles :of the present in vention, and illustrating the separable members of the catch secured to the separable members of a portfolio, or other suitable receptacle, as abag, vanity-case, suit-case, or the like; and Figure 2 is a side elevation ofthe said locking or holding catch with the members which arejto be locked by means of the catch being shown in their closed and locked relation,

Figures 5 and 6 are perspective views, showing collectively but in their disengaged relation the main members or elements of the catch, Figure 5 representing the front face-portions of the catch, and Figure 6 the rear facesportions of the same, and Figure 7 is a perspective view of the haspmeinber of the catch.
Similar characters of reference are employed in allof the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
7 Referring now to the several figuresof the drawings, the reference-characters 1 and .2 indicate fragmentary portions of two members of a port-folio, music-roll, pocket-book, bag, vanity-case, suit case, or the like, which are to be brought into locked relation by means of the holding or looking catch.
The holding, or looking catch which embodies the principles of the present in vention comprises two box-like elements or shells, as 3 and 4, the lower element 3 being adapted to be secured to the member 1 by means of fastening lugs 5, or other suitable' fastening means, and the upper element 4: being adapted to be secured to the member 2 by means of fastening lugs 6, or other suitable fastening means. V
The said lower element 3 which may be of any suitable configuration, but which'is preferably of a rectangular configuration, as here shown, is made in the form of a chambered shell or box, the face-plate of which i's-siti rounded by the marginal flanges or edges 7.

Connecting the side flanges or edges of the said chambered shell or box is a vertical wall, as 8, which is provided with a lug-receiving opening, as 9. i
The upper element 4, herein-above men tioned, may also be of any suitable configuration, preferably of the rectangular configuration here shown, and the same is made in the form of a chambered shell or box, the
faceplate of which is surrounded by the marginal flanges or edges 10. The said side edges or flanges 10 are cut away or slitted, as. at 11, and are also formed with the outwardly curved portions or horns 12, the said slitted portions 11 providing suitable bearings in which the cross-bar or member 1 1 of of the hasp-member 18 is oscillatorily disposed, and the said outwardly curved portions or horns 12 serving as stops adapted to engage with the lower curved surface-portions 15 of the side-members of the hasp to properly support the hasp in its lowered position, as will be evident. The connecting member 16 of the'hasp may be provided with a suitably formed fingerpiece, as 17, for raising and lowering the hasp from and into its locking or holding relation with sides of the lower chambered shell or box 8.
Near the bearings formed by the hereinabove mentioned slitted portions 11, the 4 upper shell or box 4 is provided with laterally extending flanged portions, as 18, the connecting portion located between said flanged portions 18 being provided with a downwardly extending lock-stud or lug 19, surrounded upon itsback by a marginal flange 20. Within the back'or chamber of the said upper shell or box 1 is a resilient spring-plate 21, extending beneath a cammember 22 extending angularly from the cross-bar or member 1 1 of the hasp and in operative engagement with the back of the said spring-member or plate 21, the latter being provided with a narrow portion, as 23, snugly fitted between the surrounding flange-portions 20 of the lock-stud or lug 19, substantiallyas shown, and whereby the said spring-plate is held against displacement from its operative engagement with the previously mentioned cam-member 22.
The operation of the catch will readily be understood from an inspection of the several figures ofthe drawings, and any further description of the sameis therefore deemed unnecessary, suflice it to say, however, that when the lock-stud or lug 19 has entered into its retaining engagement with the receiving slot 9 in the wall 8 of the lower box-like element or shell 3, the laterally extending flange portions 18 of the upper boxlike element or shell 4 will act as stops, rest-ing securely upon the said wall 8, so that the two elements 3 and 4: are thereby in perfeet alinement to permit the spring-controlled hasp to be lowered down upon and more readily and cheaply manufactured, and a is not likely to get out of order.
Of course I am aware that changes may be made 1n the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the invention asset forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the said specification,
nor do I confine myself to the exact details H of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A catch comprising an upper and a lower element, said elements being surrounded rearwardly extending flanges, one of the flanges of the lower element being provided with a lock-stud receiving slot, and a lock-stud projecting marginally from the lower rearwardly extending flange of IUD said upper element, said lock-stud being adapted to enter said slot, and said lockstud being provided with a rearwardly extending marginal flange, a spring-plate within the chambered portion of said upper I element, said spring-plate being provided with a narrow extension fitted into the chamber portion of said lock-stud, and a hasp pivotally connected with said upper element, said hasp being provided with a cam-member spring-plate. v p

- and a hasp pivotally connected with the upper element, said hasp being provided with a cam-member in engagement with said spring-plate.
4. A catch comprising an upper and a lower element, said elements being surrounded by rearwardly extending flanges, one of the flanges of the lower element being provided with a lock-stud receiving slot, and a lock-stud extending from said upper element, said lock-stud being adapted to enter said slot, and said lock-stud being provided with a rearwardly extending marginal flange, a spring-plate within the chambered portion of said upper element, said springplate being provided with a narrow extension fitted into the chambered portion of said lock-stud, stop-flanges extending inwardly from the side-flanges of said upper element and located one at each side of said lock-stud, a hasp pivotally connected with the upper element, said hasp being provided with a cam-member in engagement with said spring-plate, and horn-shaped members extending from said upper element with which portions of the hasp are adapted to engage, so as to limit the closing movement of the hasp.

A catch comprising an upper and a lower element, said elements being surrounded by rearwardly extending flanges, one of the flanges of the lower element being provided with a lock-stud receiving slot, the side-flanges of said upper element having slitted portions providing bearings, and a lock-stud projecting marginally from the lower rearwardly extending flange of said upper element, said lock-stud being adapted to enter said slot, and said lock-stud being provided with a rearwardly extending mar ginal flange, a spring-plate within the chambered portion of said upper element, said spring-plate being provided with a narrow extension fittedinto the chambered portion of said lock-stud, and a hasp pivotally 'mounted'i-n said bearings, saidhasp being provided with a cam-mernbe'r in engagement with said spring-plate.

A catch comprising an upper and a lower element, said elements being surrounded by rearwardly extending flanges, one of the flanges of the lower element being provided with a lock-stud receiving slot, the side-flanges of said upper element having slitted portions provided bearings, and a lock-stud extending from said upper element, said lock-stud being adapted to enter said slot, and said lock-stud being provided with a rearwardly extending marginal flange, a spring-plate within the chambered portion of said upper element, said springplate being provided with a narrow extension fitted into the chambered portion of said lock-stud, stop-flanges extending inwardly from the side-flanges of said upper element and located one at each side of said lock-stud, and a hasp pivotally mounted in said bearings, said hasp being provided with a cam-member in engagement with said spring-plate.
