`ALBERT F. FULLER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE J. E. MERGOTT COMPANY, OF NEW JERSEY.
PURSE OR BAG FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,579, dated November 13, 1900.
Application filed September 21, 1900. Serial No. 30,668. (No model To ttl whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Purse or Bag Frames; and I do hereby declare tlie following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in bag or purse frames and catches therefor; and the invention refers more especially to that class of frames employed with chatelaine-bags and belt-bags, but may also be used with any other known construction of bag.
This invention has for its primary object to provide a simple and neat construction of holding or locking catch for bag or purse frames which is of a strong and durable construction, securely retains the frame-sections of the bag or purse in their closed relation to each other, and is readily manipulated when used in connection with chatelaine or belt bags by means of a simple push or pressure in a downward direction against a fingerpiece of the holding or locking catch, Whereby the bag or purse can be opened by means of one hand.
The invention has for its further object'to providea novel means for securing the framesections to a side piece of a bag and an auxiliary and smaller bag which forms a pocket on the side ofthe large bag.
Myinvention therefore consists in the novel construction of bag or purse frame hereinafter fully set forth and in the novel construction of a holding or locking catch therefor.
This invention. consists, furthermore, in the several novel arrangements and combinations oi' the various parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter fully described and then embodied in the clauses of the claim which forms a part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of part of a side piece ofany suitable forni of bag provided with a side pocket, said view illustrating in connection therewith in side view one form of bag or purse frame and holding or locking catch embodying the principles of my present invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of a portion of the said side piece of the bag and its pocket, illustrating one means of securing the frame thereto. Fig. 3 is a Vertical section of the several parts represented iu said Figs. l and 2, said section being taken on line 3 3 in said Fig. l. Fig. 4. is a top edge view of the two frame-sections and catch. Fig. 5 is a bottom View of the same, and Fig. o is a horizontal section taken on line 6 6 in Fig. 1. Fig. '7 is a vertical cross-section, on an enlarged scale, of the two frame-sections and the holding or locking catch, illustrating the several parts in their held or locked engagement, said section being taken on line '7 7 in Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a similar section of the parts represented in said Fig. 7, but illustrating-the holding or locking catch in its actuated or raised position to' permit the frame-sections of the purse or bag frame to be opened; and Fig. 9 is alongitudinal vertical section of one of the frame-sections, the holding or lockingr catch therefor, and the casing in which said holding or locking catch is arranged, said section being taken on line 9 9 in said Fig. 4.V Fig.
cate corresponding parts.
In the said drawings, a indicates the usual side piece of any suitable construction of bag, Which is'made oi'leather, and b is a suitable bag which is' secured beneath the opening a in said side piece a by meansof my novel construction of frame and forms an auxiliary bag or pocket to the large bag, of which a is one of the side pieces.
In the present construction of frame, o indicates a I-shaped frame-section which is provided at its lower end portions c' with a IOO pair of forwardly-projecting lugs or ears 02,'
in each one of which there is a suitable hole or perforation for the purposes hereinafter speciied. The outer marginal edge of said framesection c may be scalloped or ornamented in any other desirable manner, and on its outer face, contiguous to said marginal edge, this frame-section c may be provided with a raised portion c3. This raised portion c5 is made to conform with the outer configuration of the said frame-section c and is preferably made separate therefrom, as shown; but this is not essential, and the said portion c3 may be entirely omitted, if desired. When the framesectioirc and portion c3 are to be attached around the opening a in the side piece a and around the mouth of the bag b, the said parts are provided with suitably-disposed holes or perforations; in which are arranged pins or rivets CZ, which are passed through the material of the bag parts a and Z) and through correspondingly-arranged holes or perforations in a holding strip or section CZ upon the back of the bag b and clenched to provide heads on said pins for securing the said parts irmly together in the manner illustrated in said Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings.
Pivotally secured against the flat face or surface of the frame-section -c is the other frame-section e of the bag or purse frame. This frame-section e is also made ||shaped when viewed from the front, and in cross-section is l"shaped. The lower end portions e' of the said frame-section e are provided with suitably-arranged holes or perforations and are pivotally connected with the ears or lugs c2 of the frame-section c by means of pins or rivetsf. The said frame-section e is secured upon the surrounding portion a2 of the side piece a and the mouth portion b' of the auX-` iliary bag or pocket b by means of an ordi-` nary inlay Zt and rivets or pins t, as clearlyillustrated in the several figures of the draw.- ings.
The arrangement and construction of the holding or locking catch and its casing are as follows: The casing, as will be seen more especially from Figs. 7, 8, and 9, consists, essentially, of a bent or curved top Z and the front Zl and back Z2, the said curved top Z be ing provided at its ends with lugs Z3, which are passed through holes 'or openings e5 in the part e4 of the frame-section e and then bent over against the under side of the said parts e4 to secure said casingZ in place7 as will be clearly evident from Fig. 9. In the front piece Z of the said casing Z is an open.- ing Z4, and lthe back piece Z2 of said casing is provided with an oppositelyLplaced hole or opening Z5. Within this casing Z I have ar ranged the main portion of a holding or locking catch Z6, the same having a forwardly-extending portion Z7, which projects from the opening Z4 in the front piece Z' of the casiugZ and is provided with an upwardly-bent and forwardlywprojecting ngei-piece Z8, substantially as illustrated. The said main portion sertie of the holding or locking catch ZG is also' provided lwith a rearwardly-extending portion Z9, which projects from the opening Z5 in the back piece Z2 of said casing Z. The said main portion of the holding or locking catch Z6 is retained in its normal position (indicated in Figs. 6, 7, and 9) by means of`a pair of oppositely-arranged lugs or projections Z, which are placed between the inner surfaces of the front and back walls of the casing Z to prevent lateral displacement, and also by means of a fiat spring o, which is 'placed over the main portion of the holding or locking catch and has its ends o iu forcible engagement with the under surface of the curved top Z, as clearly illustrated inr said Fig. 9. Thus it will be seen that when there is no pressure or force exerted against the finger-piece Z8 the tendency of said spring ois to retain the holding or locking catch in the position illustrated more particularly in Fig. 7, thereby permitting when the frame-.section e is closed against lthe frame-section c a nosing or holding jaw 4relatively-locked engagement, a slight push or pressure is exerted from the hand of the fperson wearing the chatelaine-bag suspended from a belt against the curved portion Z12 of the finger-piece Z8, thereby lifting the nosing or holding jaw Z1() from its holding engagement with the edge c5 of the frame-section, the
-curved end portion Z7 acting as a fulcrum against the upper surface e2 of the frame-sec tion e, as clearly indicated in Fig. 8, and the two frame-sections Gand e can then be opened, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3.
IOO
