Description

No. 896,311. PATENTED AUG. 18, 1908.
H. MELTZER & LfKARRON.
HAND BAG FASTENER. APPLICATION FILED MAY23,1908.
OM45 arr-of) ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE.
HYMAN MELTZER AND LOUIS KARRON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAND-BAG FASTENER.
T all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that we, HYMAN MELTZER and LoUIs KARRON, citizens of the United in connection with hand-bags, pocket-books and the like and which is simple in construction and operation, and automatically operated to lock the bag and which may be conveniently operated to open the bag.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the frame-work of a bag provided with our improved fastening device, Fig. 2 a plan View thereof, Fig. 3 a back side view thereof, Fi 4 a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 an inside top view of the operative part of the fastening device detached, Fig. 6 a bottom view thereof, and;Fig. 7 a section on the line 77 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawing a and a represent two yoke-shaped frame members forming the frame-work of a bag of the class specified, and the sides of which are hinged together at their ends as shown at a and in the usual way. The frame members a and a are provided with a horizontal top portions 0. and a respectively which are U-shaped in cross section, and secured to the top of the part a is a lon itudinal cap b the end portions of which are bent down over the side portions of the frame members as shown at N, and when the frame members which form the jaws of the frame are closed together as shown in Fig. 4 the cap piece 6 covers the meeting portions of body frame members.
The central part of the cap piece I) is U- shaped in cross section and is open at its inner side as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and the back wall thereof is provided with prongs b which are passed through the frame member a and clenched so as to hold said cap member firmly in connection with the jaw member or frame member a The back wall of Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 434,451.
the cap piece b is also provided adjacent to the frame member (L3 with a longitudinal re- 'cess b, and the front-wall thereof with a corresponding longitudinal recess Zf which is of greater depth than the recess 1).
All the parts of the device hereinbefore described are composed of sheet metal, and we also provide a lock device 0 which is also composed of sheet metal, and which comprises a central body member 0 a back flange 0 and a front flange c, the front flange 0 being bent to form a projecting lip c which is V-shaped in cross section as clearly shown in Fig. 4 and which covers the recess b when the parts are assembled for use. The back flange c of the locking device 0 is passed backwardly through the recess 1) and bent upwardly as 1 shown in Fig. 4 to hold the locking device in position, and the central part of the back ange c is provided with a forwardly directed tongue 0 which overlaps and holds in place a spring (1 which is placed on the central bottom portion 0 of the locking device c within the cap piece I) and the ends (Z of which are curved upwardly and bear on the inner side of the inner wall of the cap piece I). The central body portion a of the lock device 0 is provided at its opposite ends with lugs or projections c which bear on the back wall of the cap piece I) and aid in holding said lock device in proper position in the opera tion thereof as hereinafter described, and said central body portion 0 of the locking device 0 is provided at its opposite ends and at the front edge thereof and between the same and the lip 0 with recesses 0 the front walls of which are straight and the rear walls of which are beveled or inclined backwardly.
The top of the frame member or jaw a is provided with two lugs or projections c which are struck out of the material thereof, and the top and back walls of which are beveled or inclined as shown in Fig. 4, and the lugs or projections c are adapted to enter the recesses 0 when the frame members or jaws a and a are pressed together as shown in Fig. 4, and the end portions of the lip c are preferably rounded, beveled or inclined as shown at 0 The locking device 0 is adapted to rock or oscillate vertically, but is secured in position by the back flange 0 thereof, and the lugs or projections c which operate on the outer side and inner side of the back wall of the cap piece I), and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing the separate j aw or frame members of the bag are locked together, and in order to open the bag all that is necessary is to press upwardly on the lip member 0 of the lock devicec. This operation will disengage the lock device from the lugs or projections c on the frame or jaw member a and said frameor jaw members a anda maybeseparated and the bag opened.
It will-be understood thatthe spring d .normally holds the lock device 0 in a depressed position as shownin Fig. 4, and whenthe jaw or frame members a and a are again forced together the lugs ,or projections 0 force the lip .0 of the locking device 0 upwardly until said lugs or projections enter the recesses 0 at which time the spring (1 forces the lip members downwardly into the position shown in said figure'and the lugs or pro ections 0 enter the recesses c and the jaw or frame members a and a, are again locked together.
\Nith this construction we provide-a simhpls and effective device of the class speci members which are U-shaped in cross section,
a longitudinal cap member secured to the top of one of said-yoke-shaped or j aw members and provided in the back wall thereof with a longitu dinal recess and in the frontwall there of with a longitudinal recess of greater depth than the recess in the back wall thereof, and a locking device composed of a central oblong body portion having aback flange passed through the recess in the backwall of the cap member, and having a front member which passes through the recess in the front wall of the cap member and is bent backwardly to form a V-shaped lip, said body portion being provided at its opposite ends and adjacent to said lip with recesses rearwardly of which are projecting lugs, and a spring placed on the body portion of the lock device within thecap member and held in place by a tongue formed in connec tion with the back flange of the lock device and bent transversely thereof, the ends of the spring being bent upwardly so as to bear on the top of the cap member, and the other frame member being provided on the top thereof with lugs or projections adapted to enter the recesses in the opposite ends of the body portion of the lock device.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 22nd .day of May 1908.
'HYMAN MELTZER. LOUIS KARRQN.
