FASTENING FOR HAND-BAG, POCKET-BOOK, AND PURSE FRAMES.
SEECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,682, dated March 9, 1886.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE HooD, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Hand- Bag,Pocket-Book, and PurseFraInes,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a purseframe to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional eud elevation of the same, taken through the line w m, Fig. 1, and shown closed. Fig. 3 is the same section as Fig 2, but shown open. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the middle part of the same.
The object of this invention is to provide fastenings for hand-bag, pocket-book, and purse frames, constructed in such a manner that the said frames will be fastened automatically when closed, and can be readily unfastened.
The invention consists in the combination, with the recessed parts of the frame,of a plate provided with ashoulder anda flange, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A B represent the parts of a frame, which are hinged to each other at their ends in the ordinary manner. The parts A B are recessed to receive the fastening-plate O, which is hinged to the part A by means of a wire, D, and has a flange, E, on the lower side of its forward part, to engage with the part B of the frame and fasten the said frame shut. The middle part of the plate 0 is enlarged to receive the hinging-wire D, and upon the forward side of the lower part of the said enlargement is formed a shoulder, F, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The rear part of the plate 0 projects, to serve as a stop to prevent the said plate from being turned too far back. The
end parts of the hinging-wire D rest in the groove in the part A of the frame that receives the edge of the body of the hand-bag, pocketbook, or purse.
A convenient way of applying the plateC to the part A of the frame is to insert one end of the wire D in the perforation of the said plate 0, pass the projecting end of the wire through the recess in said part A until the said plate comes to its seat in the said recess and the said wire rests in the groove of the said part. The wire D is then pushed along the groove in the part A of the frame and through the perforation in the plate 0 by means of a screw-driver or other pointed implement until its ends project about equally at the ends of the said plate 0, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig 4, when the said plate 0 will be held securely in place withoutany further fastening. \Vith this construction, when the frame A B is closed the part B strikes the shoulder F, and forces the forward part of the plate 0 downward, when theflange Eengages with the part B of the frame, and fastens the said frame shut until the said part B is released by raising the forward part of the fastening-plate O. The upward movement of the forward part of the plate 0 swings the shoulder Fof the said plate against the part B of the frame, and pushes the said part back so that the frame can be readily opened. The ends of the forward part of the hinged plate 0 are flared, as shown in Fig. 4, to engage with the ends of the recess in the part B and serve as a dovetail, to further secure the parts of the frame from being opened by an outward. pressure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the recessed parts A B of the frame, of a plate, 0, hinged to the said part A, and provided with a flange, E, and shoulder F, to engage with the said part B, substantially as herein shown and described.
GUSTAVE HOOD.
