FgHElLEs. y Clasps for Pocket-Books, &c.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIOK HEILES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLASPS FOR POCKET-BOOKS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,001, dated November 17, 1874; application filed October 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known.- that I, FREDRIGK HEILEs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Glasps for Pocket-Books, &c., of which the following is a specification:
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view when closed. 2 is a similar View when open.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in a clasp for pocketbooks, satchels, &c., constructed of two projections, one of which is combined with one jaw of the frame and fitted in a recess of the other projection, which is combined with the other jaw, the two being disposed in such a manner that when the frame is closed the projections spring into each other, and by this means the frame and the article to which it is applied is held in a closed condition.
The letters A B designate two jaws composing the frame of a pocket-book, satchel, or similar article, which jaws are connected together by hinge-joints a a, so that they are capable of opening and closing on each other. Vith each of these jaws is combined a button on projecting piece, O or D, which is formed with or secured to the jaws in any suitable manner. The projection O is made partially fiat at b, and it is provided with a recess or socket, c, in which the front of the other projection, D, is tted, as shown in Fig. l, the projection D being received in the recess c when the two projections are brought together in closing the jaws.
The projections are placed in such position Fig.
on the jaws A B, relatively to each other, that when the jaws are closed the edge of one projection strikes against that of the other, and by the force of closing the jaws the projections displace each other, the one springing into the recess c of the other, and the two interlocking, whereby the frame `or the article to which it is applied is held in a closed condition. frame at the same time is capable of being opened by forcing the jaws and their projections apart.
The projections O D may be made of any chosen form, either round or square, and when made square one of the projections is preferably beveled to facilitate its union with the other.
In the present example the projections are niadespherical, whereby they work with the greatest ease, and, furthermore, present a neatl and elegant appearance.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a frame for pocket-books, Sto., the pro-- Witnesses W. HAUEE, E. F. KAsTENEUBER.
