UNITED GEORGE CROUCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FASTENING FOR HAND BAGS AND SATCHELS.
EJPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,243, dated June 26, 1888 Application filed May 18, 1888. Serial No. 274,251. (No model.)
T0 or whom it may concern.-
Beit known thatI, GEORGE CROUCH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Fastenings for Hand-Bags and Satchels, of which the following is a specification.
Various devices have heretofore been made for fastening together the hinged sections of hand-bags and satchels; but most of these devices are liable to become easily or accidentally unfastened.
My improvement relates to a fastening for hand-bags and satchels, the same consisting of a framepiece having a spring and having depending lugs, by which said frame-piece is riveted to one of the hinged sections of the bagframe, and upon which framepiece there is a spring-catch or lifting plate, while upon-the other hinged section of the frame there is a hinged hasp, which is adapted to pass over a stud upon the frame-piece and beneath the spring-catch or lifting-plate.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross section of my improved fastening and the upper por tion of the hand-bag'or satchel. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same, the moving parts being shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3.
a 0 represent the hinged sections of the bag frame; 0, the leather of which the bag is com posed, and cl represents the frame-piece, upon the under side of which are the depending lugs 1 2, which pass through the hinged section a and are riveted th'crelo.
There is a recess formed in the under side of the frame (Z, in which is secured a spring, 0, and said frame pieceis slotted at- 3 and provided with lugs at 4 and a central stud at 5. The spring-catch or liftingplatef is recessed, as shown in Fig. 3, and provided with lugs at 6, forming, with the lugs 4 and a pin passing through the said lugs, a hinged joint, upon which the springcateh or liftingplatef can swing, the base of saidspring'catch or lifting plate being above the slot M3 and having one end of the spring 6 bearing against it. The hasp g is made in two parts and hinged at 7, and is riveted at 8 to the hinged section b of the bagfranie, and the swinging portion of said hasp is perforated centrallyand adapted to pass over the stud 5 upon the frarnepiece d.
111 the position shown in Fig. 1 the bag is supposed to be shut and fastened, and to open the same the spring-catch or lifting-platef is raised against the action of the spring 0 into g the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the hasp-plate g is lifted from off the stud 5 and swung over into the dotted position, Fig. 1, when the bag can be opened, and to close the same the plate 9, after the sections a b are brought together, is swung over upon the stud 5 and the spring-catch or lifting-plate fis snapped down upon it into the position shown in full lines, when the bag is again locked and fastened.
My improved bag or satchel fastening is very simple, containing few parts, and is easily operated and not liable to get out; of order, and the same is adapted for use in connection with the various styles and sizes of handbags and satchels.
1 claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in a fastening for hand bags and satchels, of a framepiece secured to one of the hinged sections of the handbag and having a stud thereon, a hinged hasp secured to the other hinged section of the bag and adapted to pass over the stud on the framepicce, and a springcatch or lifting-plate connected to the frame-piece and adapted to be snapped down upon the hinged hasp-plate, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the hinged sections a b of the bag, of the frainepiece (Z, secured to the section a by lugs or their equivalent and recessed upon its under side, and provided with a spring, e, and stud 5, the spring catch or liftingplate-f, pivoted to the framepiece (I and acted upon by the spring 6, and the hinged hasp g, secured to the section b and adapted to pass over the stud 5 and beneath the springcatch or liftingplate f, sulostan tially as set forth.
Signed by me this 14th day of May, 1888.
GEO. CROUCH.
