Clasp s for Pocket-Books. N0. 142,447. Patented September2,1873.
AM, P/IOlU-L/THUGFAFH/C C0. M KMSBORNE'S PROCESS} PATENT Orrron.
JOHN F. DUBBER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLASPS FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent BIO-142,447, dated September 2, 1873 application filed July 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN FREDERICK DUB- BER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clasp for Pocket-Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 represents a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same in a larger scale than the previous figure, the line mm, Fig. 1, indicating the plane of section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a clasp which is composed of two jaws that areprovided with one or more countersunk holes, and exposed to the action of an elastic wire which passes through a'loop, said jaws being made to act in conjunction with the conical head of a post in such a manner that, by means of the wire and its supporting-loop, the jaws can be swung up or down, and by depressing them on the post the jaws are forced open and made to catch hold of the post beneath its head, and thereby that part of a pocket-book, satchel, or other article to which the loop is attached, becomes fastened to the part which supports the post.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a loop which is fastened to the closing flap B of a pocket-book, or to a corresponding part of a satchel, box, or other article. Through this loop extends a wire, a, by preference made of steel, and tempered so that it preserves a high degree of elasticity. This wire branches off in two arms, to each of which is secured a jaw,
b. These jaws are, by preference, stamped out of sheet-brass or other suitable material, and they are provided in their inner edges with cavities c, which may be round, square, or polygonal, and which are situated in such relation to each other that when the inner edges of the j aws are brought together by the springarms of the wire a said cavities produce holes, which are round, square, or of any other desirable shape. To the body of the pocketbook or other article is secured a post, (1, which is provided with a tapering head, may be flat or round, or of any other suitable form or shape, and which is so situated that either of the sets of cavities c in the jaws b can be depressed on the said post, and as the jaws are depressed they open and the cavities a catch beneath the head of the post, and thereby the pocket-book or other article becomes firmly closed; The shoulder on the under surface of the head of the post is inclined, so that by forcing the jaw' 12 upward they are caused to open, and the pocket-book or other article can be readily opened.
This clasp can be made cheap, and it can be applied and operated with great convenience on pocket-books, satchels, trunks, and boxes of any description.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The jaws b I), having the cavities c c, and separately connected with the branching arms of the spring-wire a, in combination with each other and with the loop A and pin (1, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
