IMPROVEMENT lN FASTENINGS FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
Sp zcification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,094, dated October 28, 1873 application filed August 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDRICK HEILEs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Pocket-Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a front view of my invention as applied to a pocketbook when the same Fig. 2 is a similar view of the fastenis a transverse section of the same. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan of the fastening, partly in section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a hinged springjaw on the baseplate of a case, the front plate of which is provided with one or more openings, while from the spring jaw projects a locking-arm with one or more edges corresponding to the opening or openings in the front plate of the case, in combinanation with a barb attached to the closing-flap of a pocket-book, satchel, or other article of a similar nature, in such a manner that by depressing saidnose into one'of the openings in the front plate of the case the closing-flapis fastened, and by pressing back the hinged jaw against the action of its spring the barb is released, and the closing-flap can be thrown open.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a case, to the base-plate a, of which is secured, by a pivot, b, a jaw, c, which is drawn up against the front plate (I of the case by a spring, (1. In said front plate are one or more openings, c, and from the jaw '0 extends an arm, f, close under the front plate. (Best seen in Fig. 3.) If the spring-jaw is allowed to close up against the front plate of the case, the inner edge of the locking-arm f projects beyond the inner edge of one of the openings 0 in the front plate, and the edge of a recess or aperture, g, in said locking-arm projects beyond the inner edge of the second opening 0 in the front plate, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing. On the closing-flap B of the pocket-book, or other article to which my fastening is applied, I secure a barb, it, (see Fig. 3;) and it this barb is depressed into one of the openings 6 in the case A, the hinged jaw c is forced back, and after the barb has entered the locking-arm catches over its shoulder, and the closing-flap is fastened.
By providing two or more openings, 6, in the front plate A, the closing-flap can be adjusted according to the varying size of the pocketbook, produced by the contents of the pocketbook, or other article to which my fastening is attached.
When the spring-jawc is forced back to the position shown in Fig. 2, the barb h is released, and the closingfiap can be thrown open.
It will be noticed that by pivoting the springjaw at one end upon the case A, on a line with the face-plate d of the case, a seemingly imperceptible joint is produced when the jaw is closed, said jaw thus forming a flush surface and a continuation of the face-plate.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a fastening for pocket-books, the jaw c, pivoted at one end upon the case A, forming a continuation of its face-plate d when closed, in combination with the spring d, locking-arm f, and barb h, all constructed as hereinshown, for the purpose specified.
